Outrunners on Megadrive - why so pricey???
« on: September 01, 2023, 04:07:21 pm »
I'm curious - does anyone know why Outrunners on the Megadrive is so flipping expensive on eBay these days???  I mean, I know the price of retro games has gone a bit mad, but these prices are absolutely insane for a port that was absolutely slated when it was first released. I mean... £70 for the cartridge on its own??? Complete copies going for almost £300 😬🤯 Absolute insanity.

In many ways you've answered your own question - "the price of retro games has gone a bit mad"

That impacts some games more than others and will often impact the games that didn't sell so well as, simply, there are less of them.
There are collectors markets both for complete Megadrive game sets and OutRun games sets and to complete the collections you also need to buy the duffers and those that didn't sell well.

Even moreso when the duffers and poorly received games of the time are seen in a better light. Retro Gamer magazine (issue 247 - Out Run 2) referenced Outrunners as "underrated and overlooked" so it is now seen as a decent game helped by the passing of time. Some games age well, others don't. Those that age well have a better value.

Supply and Demand - there aren't so many of them (as other games) and the demand is greater than it ever was. That said, the price on eBay isn't necessarily it's worth and they aren't necessarily selling at that price. IT's only worth what someone is willing to pay after all. CEX (and other direct sellers of retro games) perhaps gives a better idea of value (if you knock a few quid off!)

Or he could play it on an emulator. Not really the aim of collecting though, is it?

Or he can get a repro cart and play it on real hardware.

Or he can buy the real deal and play it on real hardware. The possibilities are endless 🙂

My actual Megadrive's been in storage for many years, so I don't actually want a copy of  the game to do something stupid with it like, y'know, actually playing it - I'd rather play the proper arcade version in MAME. What it is, see, is I've started a little OutRun collection and I'd quite like to have a copy of MD Outrunners to add to it... but not for those feckin' prices.

There's someone selling the cartridge alone for £69.99. Each time it comes to within a few days of the auction ending, I send him an offer of £40 and he refuses. 3 times now it's been listed and not once has he had a single bidder (and for all I know he might've listed it many times more before this). You'da thunk, he might've got the message by now, after 3 listings and no bids, that he's overpriced it a tad...

I can make you one for like $5.

Tempting PBJ, tempting... I'd been toying with the idea of hitting you up for a DIY one. I might just keep trying to wear this guy down on eBay for a bit longer...

I could make you a custom label and everything, just saying.

What a great idea for a collection! I've toyed with doing a Crazy Taxi collection but I have nowhere to put such a big cab 😄

You can get a bootleg cart in a bootleg case for about $10 shipped from China.

I guarantee nobody will know the difference and your collection will continue to peel as many panties off as it currently does.

Don't think that would be humanly possible  8)

Where can I get the bootleg Chinese stuff from? Is this like Wish and Etsy territory?

Can normally get them on eBay. Most of the upfront guys will say it's a copy. Many will have repro cases too. I bought a repro case for my genuine Alien Soldier cart.

Hrrrm, I wonder if it's a regional thing then, I'm only seeing all the super expensive stuff (apart from a single repro cover). I might have to have a mess around with search filters and see if I can widen the search.

Ah, so you did, thanks! I'm ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- at noticing when people have PM'd me. Interestingly, the search results you messaged me came up with no results in my region (which is what it defaulted to). But changing it to the US suddenly filled the screen with all the lovely dodgy Chinese bootlegs.
