Searching for the most efficient control panel

Thanx for that....
Sephroth57, do you have any pics of your 4P cab and podium GuantletL? Are Players 3 and 4 angled on the podium cab?
Cheers

It does have a large "cool" factor when people see it, but its usefulness is debatable. my gauntlet dark legacy has 4 players... but its a dedicated machine so thats different. for MAME, i dont think its needed, its like when i bought my sports car, who cares if the back seat can barely fit a dog, im always driving =P

You make a good point Sephroth,
The primary reason I wanted a 4P CP was for coolness. That is one of my reasons for building my mame cabinet.
Because my mame cabinet won't require quarters, actually having four players playing simultaneously is much more likely.
I think I have made up my mind about how many buttons I'll need for the CP now I need some advice on the orientation. If anyone can give me a good reason to change the button counts for the players please do.
What is the best or most common way to orient the buttons for players 3 and 4? should they be in a row, square or diamond....?
What is the best way to orient the 7 buttons for players 1 and 2? I want to make Neo-Geo, Street Fighter, and Gauntlet have correct button orientation.
T = joystick
o = button
--- Code: ---+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
3 1 2 4
T o o T o o o T o o o T o o
o o o o o o o o o o o o
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
--- End code ---
paigeoliver:
Players 3 and 4 should have a diamond of buttons. I seem to recall D&D having that setup, and that is the only 4 button 4 player game, so there you go.
mvaughn:
--- Code: ---+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
3 1 2 4
o o
T o o T o o o T o o o T o o
o o o o o o o o o o
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
--- End code ---

Yep think I'd go with a diamond button arrangment for players 3 and 4 too.....
mvaughn: How big is this CP? is it on a stand up? A lot of player 3/4 postions on cabs have the button layout rotated 'outwards' a bit to accomodate standing at an angle to the monitor. Although I would advise against rotating the joysticks (if you were thinking of it) - keep them the same orientation as players 1 and 2 (i.e. 'up' is the same for all joysticks).
