I have a home JVL Retro that I have used successfully for the last six years. Yesterday when I booted it up, I got the “file system corrupted” message and prompt to restore to factory settings by pushing the setup button. I did so, it seemed to factory reboot fine. Normal start game screen came up. I was able to insert quarters for credits, but the touch screen did not respond to any of my touches. After searching this forum, it seems that the solution might be replacing the io battery by soldering on a new one, but no one else mentioned having touch screen issue on the forum to go with the dead battery, so I thought I would post and get some informed opinions. Will a dead io battery cause a touchscreen not to work as well? Could it be another issue? I believe I am running itouch10. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Seems like a software problem. I think it's too big of a coincidence you're receiving filesystem corruption messages and your Touchscreen dies at the same time. I'd try a reinstall and possibly a different CF card

Thanks for the advice. Sadly, as an inexperienced home user, I don’t know how to reinstall software or switch the cf card. Any directions would be appreciated (I know it’s never a joy to help the uninformed - but maybe there is a saint out there).

Its quite the challenge to get to the CF card. You will have to remove the coin box, coin mech, coin mech housing, then its still a pain to get the computer unit out because you have to disconnect all the wiring going into it. Then you have to remove the motherboard out of the computer unit housing to get to the CF card.

Im sure once you get that far, someone might upload a image you can write to the CF card (make sure you have a CF card reader to connect it to your computer)Good luck.

Thanks! I have removed the coin mech, and the coin mech housing. Where is the computer unit housing? Is it the smaller metal box on the right that has a USB port that is attached to the larger metal box? I have removed the bottom three harnesses , but I can’t reach the wires behind or get the metal box loose. Advice?

Yes it's the metal box with USB. There's a nut on top securing it to the case. It's easier to access the cables if you open it up from the front

I removed the nut, but I can’t get the metal box to separate from the bigger box behind it. Are the cables in back preventing that, or is there a metal tab somewhere latching it. Should I slide it up or down, forward or back? It feels like if I use much more force, it will break something.

By open it up from the front, do you mean take off front of machine? If so, is there an easy way to do that?

The little metal box with usb is not the computer unit, its the audio amp. You need to remove the big metal box. To open the front you need to unscrew i believe 4 nuts holding the monitor to the frame. Then there is a spring loaded hinge that alows the monotor to flip down so you can acerss the wiring behind the metal box.

I have the big metal box open - from the back - I couldn’t figure out where the nuts were to release the front screen. Where is this elusive cf card?

The CF card is under the motherboard. You need to remove the board to get to the CF card.

Finally got the cf card out. Is there anyone out there who is willing to share the image I need (turns out it is itouch9) to write to a new cf card. Also need to know - can it be any size cf card as big or bigger than original? What should the cf card be formatted as (FAT32, etc.)? Thanks all!

I have a itouch 9 CF card laying around somewhere. I'll see if i can find it and image it for you. As far as card size, you need at least 512mb. You will most likely find 4gb + cards very cheap on ebay or amazon. I dont think it maters, but i wouldn't get anything larger then 8gb. As far as formatting, it doesnt natter, the image with take care of formatting. Its linux based OS anyway so its probably ext2 , not fat32.

you need to install a program called usb image tool.

Okay - downloaded usb image tool, it made me download additional software to run, but appears to be running now. I have opened the usb image tool application and selected my Transcend cf card reader as the device. Is the next step clicking on restore and then choosing the itouch 9 folder?

Yes click restore, then find the itouch9.img you dounloaded and select it and hit ok

Ok. The next boot I held in the button and did a factory reset. Ran a few tests including flash and received no errors. Played a few games, turned it off. Turned the machine on and received the red screen.

Thoughts ??

The system went from the previous screen to this one. I can factory reset each time, recal the touchscreen and play games. Hard to imagine the cf is corrupt.

I replaced the motherboard battery but unsure of the function of the soldered battery on the i/o card. I figure if I have to fix things I like to know what their purposes are. Would that battery cause these issues ?

most clone programs just slam the data on there with no verification... so even though the disk images "ok", the bits will still be bad.

lilshawn...what's your second ?? You thinking corrupt data card or dead i/o battery ?

I'm getting a reading of .9 on the battery. I'll put a new battery in first and then go after the card.

mahkeymike had posted a link to itouch 9 but it's bad. I don't have an image of itouch 9, does anyone have one to share ?

Maybe I'll just upgrade to 11. Is it worth it ?

battery for sure, but probably a failing CF card as well.

i might have a itouch 9 cd kicking around somewhere i can make an image of... you'll have to either burn a cd with it and boot the machine with a cd rom attached to it... or try and use it on your windows machine to create an install USB (about a 2 out of 10 chance it works properly... it doesn't really play nice with anything but windows xp) that you boot the machine with.

Thanks. I saved that image.

Great news...put a new 3.6v in the i/o card. It booted to the factory reset, reset it and it starts perfectly now.

That was it. So I'm guessing the CF is fine. Thanks all for writing.

Quite the learning experience taking out that switch.

JVL is the worst when it comes to trouble shooting. Like seriously, wtf does a io battery have to do with file corruption? I mean, its there for one purpose, to store game saves. You would think the F'ing software would just say corrputed game save data please replace IObord Battery, but nope.

the "file" it's talking about the the data stored in the IO board RAM chip that holds the sales and configuration data.
