Mortal Kombat crt to led conversion
« on: October 15, 2016, 08:42:40 pm »
New to this and just picked up an old Simpson's Bowling(Mortal Kombat) cabinet that I'm converting to a multi arcade. The 25" crt is shot and I'm going to switch over to an led.  Obviously I want to put in an led that will allow me to keep a similar 25" display, but since led's are wider I'm not sure what size to use.  Any suggestions on what size LED screen I should consider?

Thanks.

You should at the very least consider getting the monitor parts to someone who will fix it if you aren't going to try yourself.

25" 4:3 is 15" tall, which is the dimension you care about for the picture size.  Minimum round number in 16:9 puts you at 31" (15.2" tall), or more practically most monitors/TVs are 32" (15.7" tall).  That will at least give you the same size picture when centred.

With that said, you're now jumping from 20" wide to nearly 28" wide (plus whatever bezel/frame the panel has), so make sure that can physically fit inside your cabinet.  You can use MAME artwork features to put up dynamic marquee artwork to match the game you're playing to fill in the extra display area you're not using, which can look quite nice if done correctly.

But, I'll also second the above.  A CRT would look a hell of a lot nicer.  At least try and investigate the option of getting that working.

the widest LCD you can fit in an MK cab horizontally, is 28"

With aspect ratios it will have a smaller picture than the 25" CRT that was in there. You could vertically mount an LCD and rotate the picture, or be a tard like me and vertically mount a 36" CRT.

That'll give you about a 24" horizontal picture when you rotate the image.

28" it is then. Thanks for the responses. As far as the crt, I have no interest in restoring it as I haven't the first clue where to begin. I'm pretty tech savy, but monitors aren't my thing. There's a few places in town I'm going to check with to see if they want it because I don't want to throw it in the trash.

Sorry to reply to such an old thread, but I am trying to do exactly what you have in this picture. Can you provide more info on how you mounted the 28" lcd monitor in the cabinet as shown in the pic? TIA!

1x6 cut to the width of the cabinet
monitor mounted to the board with VESA screws (just drilled the holes in the board with a VESA template I printed out then screwed it in)
board secured to cab with either L angles or L braces, I don't remember it was a decade ago.
