pce vs turbografix 16
« on: February 13, 2016, 08:29:54 pm »
I am trying to decide between a turbo 16 or a pc engine. I live in the US. I really like the look of the pce better but will I have comparability issues hooking it up in the US? also if I had the turbo everdrive would the US games work fine?

Are you talking about emulation or physical (original) hardware....?

For the games that do not have a language barrier you will almost always be able to get the japanese versions of games cheaper. In that way I'd recommend the pce. As well, the pce consoles are more commonly found for good prices than the turbografx. The controller cords are very very short for pce, you'll want to get an extension which can easily be found on ebay.

Myself I fixed up a broken pc engine duo (the first combo system that plays cards and cd's) and installed a region mod switch to play us games as well. ;)

As far as hookups go - the original pc engine (white model) can only do rf hookups without a mod...you might have issues tuning to the right channel with the japanese rf, I'm not sure about that. (I know that for rf japanese famicoms you need to be able to tune your tv into the 90s range of channels.)  But both the pc engine and turbografx have addons called 'AV Booster' that can give you easily usable composite. The coregrafx (gray) revisions of the pc engine have a video port with composite built in.  The combo cd units have this port as well.

I'm not an expert by any means, but it's my understanding that the expansion port pinouts on the pce/tg16 are just there for the taking and include both composite and rgb out.... you merely have to hook up the pins as the booster add-ons had minimal circuitry (I think a resistor or two?)

I haven't ran across a good price on a tg16 yet, but it's on my wanted list.

physical.

thanks for the input. I like both but the pce just seems like it can be had for a little cheaper.
I usually just get us versions of consles, but I was just torn between these 2.
also I am more than capable of region modding or rgb if need be
