Somebody Save Me From My Stupidity

jaharr01:
I have a couple of questions
1. When I post on my build thread the only way I can figure how to insert images on a post is by attaching it. I found the insert image button but I can't figure out how to get it to work. I read most everyone's threads and they don't use attachments.
2. How do you get those images on your thread (like a marquee or a or a description of the project) that links to your build thread. I know it has something to do with tinyurl I tried to search but I couldn't find any threads on how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

Slippyblade:
There is a sticky thread in the projects section titled "NOT A PROJECT - Thread for Posting Images to Link in our project threads".  Most of us post to that thread as an archive then attach images to our posts.  Then later we use the "img" tag in the post and link to the attached images in the OTHER thread.  Gives you more control over where they get placed in your post and still archives the image on the forum.

PL1:
One other point to remember is that when you link to attached files, make sure you aren't just linking to the thumbnail.

Example from the KADESTICK image post here.

The fourth image thumbnail is

--- Code: ---http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=297661;image
--- End code ---

The fourth image full-size is

--- Code: ---http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=297660;image
--- End code ---

If you want to resize it to 275 pixels wide, add " width=275" (I usually try to keep keep images between 400 and 640 pixels wide. YMMV.)

--- Code: ---
--- End code ---

So let me get this straight you start a thread in the not a project thread and use that thread to upload all of the attachments. Then you link it to your project thread. So what is the tiny url for that is on the marquee or signs designating your projects. Do you use that thread to store those photos ? there should be a thread somewhere that tell step by step how to do all of this stuff

That is the preferred way so you aren't relying on other photo-hosting sites (or Paradise Arcade Shop :P) to not change the URLs when they add/change servers which will break your photo links.

There is a limit of 400 characters in the signature block.

Some people use tinyURL to fit more links into their sig.

TinyURL provides a short URL that auto-redirects to a long URL -- i.e. the first link of eight in Louis Tully's sig is
http://tinyurl.com/q8paf79 which redirects to
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,132902.0.html  (makes a big difference in how many links you can fit into a sig)

My sig currently uses all 400 characters for 2 pics and 2 links.

If you have hundreds of photos of your build on Photobucket but only a dozen are really critical to understanding your build, I recommend at a minimum that you upload the critical dozen to the BYOAC server.

Large chunks of several great build threads have become impossible to follow because the photo links are broken. (deleted account, reorganized pics into different folders, server changes, etc.)

Sounds like a volunteer statement -- maybe you can help me write it up for the wiki, too.   ;D
