MDF lasting taqniqes ?

hi,
so my mame cabinent is made from MDF 2 cm think (yea its thick i know)
my question is i know mdf doesn't last so well ..
so what can i do to make it last a bit longer ?
cover it with lacquer or somthing before painting it... ?

MDF is like a mogwai right?  Just don't let it get wet. 
Unless you are painting it, then I think you are supposed to get it wet first so it absorbs the water instead of the paint. YMMV
