Spray Painting Acrylic

(1/4) > >>

Richardgregory:
Ok, I"m nearing completion of my cab...one of the last phase is the painting of the acrylic that's over the monitor.  Out of curiousity does it matter if the paint be on the outside or the inside?  Gloss or flat/matte?

Thanks

Ooops, a search just came up on this subject - some say sand it with 220 grit sandpaper??????

I'd mask off the part you don't want spraied, on the INSIDE of the plex, then hit it with a coat or two of good quality black. I don't think you'll want to sand, since the sand marks will show through, and you definitely don't want to prime.

Now, if you do decide to paint the OUTSIDE of the plex, it's a whole different story. In that case, i'd sand AND prime, but I suspect you'll get much better results painting the inside.

Paint the inside.  Use a QUALITY painters tape for blocking out the monitor.  hit it with at least 4 layers of paint.  I've used Matte and Semi-Gloss/Gloss and Gloss always comes off feeling plastic/sticky.  Matte feels like I could scratch it away with my finger.  Both look fine at the end of the day on the other side of the glass IMO.

Ok thanks...tape like that Frog Tape brand I guess....
