Dell Optiplex 755 SFF and Hyperspin - any good?

(1/1)

VoltaTom:
I am currently running Hyperspin with some basic consoles on a Dell P4 1GB RAM. Unfortunately, all of my settings on Hyperspin are at the lowest they can go and still don't have the responsiveness/smoothness I would like but the emulations run fine.

Checking the local classifieds for a replacement I found a Dell Optiplex 755 SFF (2.33 Ghz Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD) for $60. I am wondering if anyone is using this with Hyperspin in their cabinets and if it is worth the upgrade? And further, if it is any good, what's the best console I can emulate? Currently best I have is N64 but want to possibly run PSX, Gamecube, etc.

Any help/information is appreciated.

you may struggle with some of the newer generation consoles, i.e gamecube and wii.

But i'd give it a go for the price + add an HD video card, like an ATI 7750, or whatever low powered low profile card you want to budget for.

i know pscx2 doesnt run on my dual core E7XXX series, with a 5850 graphics card, dead slow.

Let me clarify - GameCube, Wii, PS2, and Dreamcast - you're going to have issues with all of them with a Core2Duo 2.3ghz and 2GB RAM.   :)

Thanks for the replies!

I feel like the price is decent enough to give it a whirl. It comes with a video card in it, but I'll have to wait until I get it to see how it is.

I don't plan on emulating Wii or PS2 on such a cheap computer, so I'm not worried about that.

I was hoping it would be able to handle Dreamcast, PSX, and Gamecube though.

Are either of you running HyperSpin on the Core2Duo? How's the performance?

It most likely only has the on-board Intel video. As mentioned you would need a low profile video card as these cases are very tight. Heat could also be an issue. If you add in a video card it will be sitting directly next to the hard drive. They aren't bad systems overall. I probably still have about a dozen of them in use at work that are due to be replaced.
