The 2012 BYOAC User Choice Awards need your nominations!

(1/23) > >>

UCA:
Welcome to the 2nd Annual BYOAC User Choice Awards Nomination Thread!

Following the wonderful response to last year's UCAs we are back to recognize the most innovative, well executed, original, and fun builds completed in 2012 across a broad range of categories.  Feel free to nominate more than one project and don't feel obligated to nominate something for every category.  Your participation is paramount to having another great event so let us know what knocked your socks off.

To increase longevity and ensure that the BYOAC UCA process remains above reproach a board has been selected to handle administrative matters.  This year's board is chaired by Yotsuya, DaOld Man, BobA, DrVenture, and Le Chuck who will use the UCA account to open UCA threads and post any administrative actions.  UCA is a non voting entity.

The Rules:

* No user can win the same category two years running.  Ms. America rules apply, you have to pass the tiara.  That doesn't mean users can't nominate a project deserving of praise, they just shouldn't get bent out of shape when it doesn't make the final voting thread.
* Forum Member Contribution category will not be held this year.  DaOld Man will wear the sash for another year whether he wants to or not. EDIT 1/2/2013 - Due to popular demand, this catergory will be open for this year.
* Categories must have at least 3 valid seconded entries to remain categories.  Those that don't will be awarded honorable mentions at the end of the nomination window.
* Categories with 6 or more entries may be split up into sub categories providing that the breakdown allows two complete new categories. For example: fullsize builds could be broken down into Uprights and Other or Uprights and Cocktails depending on what has been nominated.  This is not mandatory and will be based on the consensus of the board.
* Any board member recommended and seconded for a category will recuse himself of having anything to do with that category.
* Rule #6...THERE IS NO RULE #6!
* Decisions on whether or not something is a valid entry (fuzzy dates, versions, completeness) will be made by the consensus of the board and once published are not subject to a flame war.
* Voting will be conducted in the same automated manner as last year, board members can vote, and their role is purely administrative.
To nominate please reply with this format:

Category: Name of Build or Project: Link
<optional description of why nominated for that category>

Any project nominated twice (by different users ;)) will make it to the voting threads which will open NLT 01 FEB 2013.  That thread will close on 01 MARCH 2013 so make sure and scrub through this last year's builds then put up the links that you think progressed the hobby, just make sure whatever you're nominating was "complete" after 01 JAN 2012 and before 31 DEC 2012.

Here's a list of this year's categories and a brief definition:

Fullsize cabs - Uprights, cockpits, V-Pins, Racers, and showcase cabs that demonstrate outstanding theme, style, balance, and execution.

Small cabs and non standards - Bartops, Cocktails, Minis, Micros, and cabs more easily defined by what they aren't, cab in furniture, cab disguised as something else that demonstrate outstanding theme, style, balance, and execution.

Hardware - custom built or modified controls, lighting, products, or other physical cab elements that are new or improved this past year and advanced the hobby.

Software - this can be a piece of code or specialty tool user written or created this past year that created or improved emulation capability or generally increased software flexibility to include software hacks.

Forum Member Contribution - a member who goes above and beyond to provide users with new information, serve up helpful links, and otherwise brighten our day.

Thanks for taking the time to nominate your favorite(s) and help us document the best projects of 2012!

Lots of great stuff this year.  There were a few builds that I really wanted to see completed that I'll just have to wait another year to nominate but that doesn't detract from the great stuff that's been finished this year, a lot of it on a very tight timetable making it all the more impressive.

Here are a few that I think deserve recognition and consideration.

Fullsize: JKDubb's cocktail - wonderfully documented, great attention to detail, unique design, simple lines, good execution, a fun build.  Great stuff.

Small cab: Three years in the making retrofuture's Xevious Bartop is awesomely awesome.

Hardware:  CraftyMech's SLG - CraftyMech came out of nowhere with an amazing scan line gen that fits in a vga dongle and requires no setup aside from ensuring correct display resolution.  The results are fantastic and the fact that he went from prototype to shipping finished products in less than a month is unheard of.

Software: Nitz's coding work on the TRON in game switching - it started off as my bright idea (or fool's errand depending on who you ask  >:D ) and Nitz swooped in and pretty much held my hand through the entire thing.  I didn't do one piece of original work on that project, I just applied Nitz's code and advice to the issue and got it working.  Without Nitz it wouldn't have gotten off the ground and 100% of the credit goes to him on that one.

There are lots of other awesome builds and projects out there in every category just waiting for you to nominate them, let's see'em!

Nominations- First Go-

Fullsize -
Dr. Chek's Echo Base
Great artwork and frontend. Nice nod to a classic traditional design.

GriffinDodd's Marvel vs. Capcom: Revolution
Innovative, flashy, and well-done in many respects. I got to see this one in person, and it's pretty nice.

Nephasth's Two-Headed Beast
The light work alone makes this stand out, but the use of brushed metal control panels takes it over the top.

Small Cab

Vigo's The Vigolix
Innovative, economical, truly an example of BYOACing.

Hardware

CraftyMech's MiniSLG Scanline Generator
My favorite new thing to come down the pike here at BYOAC this year. A solid example of inventiveness and creativity. Hell, I bought three.
