Favorite Obscure Games
« on: September 29, 2003, 11:08:35 pm »
So I discovered MAME because I like Tempest, and also because there are all these video games I always wanted to play as a kid but mom could only dole out so many quarters.  Since becoming fully addicted, I've discovered a few games by people mentioning them in passing on this board that I'd never even heard of before.  For example, I think Uo Poko is hilarious, and I lose on purpose so my buddies and I can guffaw at the dead floating cats.  This game somebody mentioned called Flicky, while a bit odd, is a pretty fun game, but I never played it in the arcade.  With 4300 games or whatever it is, I'm sure there are lots of others that I'd never even discover unless somebody mentioned them.  So what are they?

My favourite obscure game -- well I guess REZ (PS2 and Dreamcast Import) would qualify.  Many people would say it's too simplistic, but man the presentation makes up for it!   It's simply a blast to play through.

And I'm also one of those guys who finds enjoyment out of Super Buster Brothers., also not particularly mainstream.

Warrior is one of the obscure ones, and still one of my favorites.

Another obscure on that I liked was Pulsar.

I'm not really sure how obscure they are (or even if they are), but hey.
Ninja Baseball Batman - awesome game I'd never heard of until I saw it mentioned somewhere.
And I must agree, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is incredible.

Space Zap (essentially the same game as DDR, but in black and white, and without the music).

Dream Shopper

Kangaroo - Except I never play it in Mame. I play it for real, since I have a Kangaroo machine.

The End (The US version is better than the default version).

Galaxy Wars - Has a space invaders look, but with totally different gameplay.

Avalanche - Like Kaboom!, but harder.

The Hand - Paper, Rock, Scissors Pac-game

Pac & Pal

And then plenty of the "popular" unknown games, like Uo Poko, Stakes Winner, Dig Dug 2, etc.

I'm curious, what do you people see in this game?  Snaaaake raves about it all the time.  It's just a side scroller action game much like TMNT.  Is there anything special about it that makes it stand out from the crowd?

well yeah, its really violent thats about it.

most side scrolls dont let you run around.
you can run on this one.like 360 circles which adds more fun.
More moves then most side scroll.

Music is REALLY great..better then any others out there.
graphic was really nice at the time.
sound effects are way too advanced considering its from the early 90's.
you get all kinds of weapons on the game.

-M16
(can beat people up with m16's gun butt after bullet runs out, hehe)
-UZI
-hand gun
-hunting rifle
-shotgun
-granades
-those red pipe bomb thingys
-knife
-barrels(spelling?)

then the bosses are really cool as well.

first comes with a dino as his helper.
second with 2 bigass butcher knife and you can use those against him after he drops the butcher knife.

then you get the drive a cadillac on the 3rd boss.

etc etc.overall it was great in the arcades at the time.  ;D ;D

I also liked the comic and cartoon but the cartoon was banned for profanity. >:(

Bally Sente is the king of obscure games in my opinion:

Snake Pit - (joystick in the left, trackball in the right)
Hat Trick - Two player madness
Chicken Shift - two buttons, that's all you need
Snacks'n Jaxson - trackball

I'm psyched to hear Avalanche, Irritating Maze, and Ninja Baseball Batman mentioned - some of my favorites.  Avalanche makes me scream.  Check out Camel Try, it's a lot like Irritating Maze, only with a spinner.

Ha!  Space Zap is awesome - but isn't it in quad color?  That's gotta be the most barbaric video game I've ever played.  Years behind Pong.

Mikie is really fun if you take the time to figure out what the heck you gotta do.

mahjong!

just kidding.  I dig Hat Trick.  I love the simple controls and people can just walk up and figure it out in seconds.  One on One hockey, the button shoots...have fun

probably a fav of mine because the arcade in Six Flags over Texas had it and me and my buds could play 2 player for a quarter (with chicken shift too)

Ooo, more of those, too!  I'd never heard of Uo Poko until just a couple of weeks ago, and I think it's fun, and funny.  I've never heard of these "popular" but unknown games.  Maybe I'm just not one of the cool kids.   ;)

I'm gonna try some of these games out that you guys are mentioning.  Hat Trick sounds great, as does C&D.

Keep 'em coming!

One really obscure game my family loves to play is Got-Cha

It's kind like simon says meets DDR meets track and field

It's a "mini game festival" and you have 3 buttons red green and blue.  antics ensue

The Space Zap in Mame is Quad color, but most of the real machines were black and white with a color overlay. Apparently Mame emulates a rare alternate color version.

Now imagine how much Space Zap would rock if you played it with a DDR pad? =)

Pipe dream is obscure, because it never made production... great game..

My favorite obscure games are all new... Because I played most of the old ones in the arcades... So the newer games are usually the ones I like.

I have to admit... I like some of the new adult quix type games.  There are a few out there and each adds some new strats since you only get to see the goods if you get a very high percentage...

As for classics I like that I didn't play before....

Timepilot 2 (whatever the year was).  Great game now that I have supers in my cab.

I like the game "Hard Hat", simple graphics but it has a nice puzzle element to it.

The Astrocade console has good ripoff of Space Zap called Space Fortress.

I never considered Pipe Dream obscure because it was a VERY popular Nes game.

And it is Time Pilot '84. Awesome game, I own the real thing. It is hard to decide which one is better. Time Pilot has the cool parachute guys to pick up (and gets more frantic), while '84 has the cooler graphics and missiles.

Chicken Shift - Totally cool game.  I am glad to see it on other people's list too.  I discovered it by accident and I am hoplessly addicted.  Wife and I like to play two player.  She on the blue button, me on the red.  It still fries your brain.

Ring King - Man, I could kick this game's ass in the arcade.  I had it down pat.  I still struggle with the MAME emulated version.  Perhaps I just can't hit the buttons fast enough, I don't know.

Space Zap -  Great game.  I don't remember color overlays on this one.
