Just got 2 showcase cabniets with dead moinitors need help
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:47:14 am »
Hello everyone I'm new to this site so please bare with me if something has been covered or if my topics seem a little off the wall.

That being said, I have 2  33 inch monitors that do not work. :banghead: They are in showcase cabinets that are also in bad shape.

I'm building a MaMe cab but I want to make sure I can either sell the monitors or use them.

I'm scared to touch the monitors with everyone saying I will die due to the billion volts left in the capacitor.

So my question... How do i safely remove the moitors :dunno? Is it worth it to get them fixed and sell them?

Thanks in advance.

If they are CRTs, they can hold a charge, but not forever.  If they've not had power for some period of time, (that I am not qualified to quantify), they should be fine.

In anycase, discharging a monitor is not hard.  There are plenty of youtube videos that will walk your throught it, you just need a some basic tools, that you have laying around.

Thank you for the reply. I've seen videos after my first post. It seems easy enough. I just need a screw driver with a rubber handle a grounding strip with a wire attached to the frame ( so it's grounded ). Now what worries me is that I won't know if it's discharged or not.

I almost just want to rid myself of the monitors completely.

Having them work on a computer monitor seems such a hassle. The low refresh rate I here sucks. You can't use
s video and you have to use a special low res graphic card.

I'm thinking that I may have to just use a LCD screen. Even though the LCD is at higher res, it doesn't have the dangers nor the requirements...

Any ideas?

When you play the classic games at their native resolutions, it's hard to go back to pixelated sharpness of an LCD. I hear there are some software solutions to mitigate this problem. I'd be interested to know if anyone had experience with these configurations or settings.

I'm so perplexed... Do I keep the 36 inch monitor I have and just get hardware to make it work with a PC? Or, do I fix them sell them and they buy  a LCD....

Anyone have a thought or something to add.. I need someone who's had this problem to help me with my fashion.

Thanks again...

Here is my showcase with LCD (No trackball just yet). I use the Mame scanline filters and it takes alot of the pixelation out of the classics like pac-man and so forth. I would do LCD all over again. The newer stuff like Daytona and House of the Dead look fantastic as does the Daphne Laserdisk stuff and console stuff looks pretty good to. The classic arcade stuff does suffer even with the filters but to me the LCD just makes things so much easier overall. I played some Donkey Kong the other night and I didn't bat an eye once at the fact it was on an LCD. It's a trade off, you gotta decide what you truly want. Classics that look fantastic, or an LCD that is easier to manage.

Wow you really did a great job!

I was thinking of modding the Cab to having a LCD in the housing. You took it out and made it your own. I give ya props!

I like the light up buttons as well.

Thank you for the detailed description.

Depending on where you are located... we still have about 20pcs of 32" CRT monitors left to build. After that all gone! They are standard res, all new grade a parts.

In fact a customer just picked one up this morning and was very impressed/ happy!
Always happy to help.., for the best in displays
