GL+DOS+AdvMAME+JOY setup works?

I'm looking into making a minicab for my godson and have a few ideas for it. I would like the following question answerd:

If I set the cab up using only GameLauncer and AdvMame running DOS, could I select and run games and exit them using only a hacked joypad on the gameport? or would I need something more (like a keyboardhack)

The reasons for such a specific setup are the following: Low costs, Crappy old PC, PowerOn-Off using single switch, Kidsafe
