This forum is hands down the best by a metric shi... ton.

What kind of advice are you looking for?

+1 on that. I think I've still got the folder with all the prints I made when I was first researching this stuff...

Afterburner:
The control panel thread is probably by far the best resource on the net today for what you are asking.

My control panel was somewhat influenced by this guy, who in turn had based his on the Supercade panel.

I didn't want or need a full 4-player panel, but I did like the flexibility that the two-deck design gives.  So I designed a smaller two-player version but with the two-deck style.  I haven't yet mounted anything to the upper deck, but I just received in the mail the analog stick (same one as in the link above in fact!) and I have a dedicated 4-way I'll mount up there as well.  And I just found a dead hard drive that I'll scavenge a bearing out of for a DIY spinner.

Tron, here I come!

Aberran:
I really just want a joystick that can be shift keyed so the computer can see it as one joystick and than another to reduce clutter.

Dawgz Rule:
I cannot understate the importance of a good CP design.  I spent a lot of time researching this one.  I simply did Google searches on "Mame Cabinets" and "Mame Control Panels" and found a good selection of items to look at.  Based on the games that I prefer to play, I came up with this as my design.  Ditto on slagcoin.com for some detailed information.  After reading through that, I changed my button layout.  I also opted for Mag Stik Plus joysticks because I liked that they could switch from 4 way to 8 way.  Now that the cab is up and running I will say that the layout I chose is working great for me.  Everything is easy to reach and comfortable to use.  I used CP Sketcher to draw it out and would recommend it prints out a nice sheet with the button locations specified.  As with any control panel, there is compromise and in my case I opted not to have a trigger stick.
