MAME shifter to mouse hack (questions).

Thanks, I'm hoping that's all that it is- I'm sure it's pretty small potatoes to read that I was all psyched that the shifter was actually being recognized in Windows when I was moving it, but for me that was such a great piece of motivation!
Does it matter where I drop the "-mouse" entry in the config file? This little trick is new to me.
What I'm not getting about the mouse not being enabled is, I have an ancient copy of MAME on another PC, and if you play Star Wars, it recognizes the mouse when maneuvering the X Wing. So I'm confused on how the install on my other PC can see the mouse and allow a person to use it if the mouse isn't enabled by default? It looks like I have alot to learn about MAME!

It's not really a trick, any good program (and a whole lotta crappy ones) have command line options. It's standard method of modifying program behavior especially for operating systems that lack a Windows component.
You probably configured it back when but just forgot about it.
MAME comes with a README file that should explain how to configure MAME to suit your needs. It would be a good idea to glance over it. It'll help you tweak MAME to your satisfaction.
BadMouth:
"-mouse" would be part of the command line you enter to launch the game, not part of the config file.
The config file will contain a line something like "mouse=0" and you'd change it to "mouse=1"
If you do that, it will be enabled for all games and you don't have to bother with the command line.
Either way will work.

You actually just made me remember that the first copy of MAME that I got was given to me by someone else, so perhaps they made the mod on their copy on their box before passing it to me (via CD). That must have been how I acquired it that way.
I have to tell you guys that being a person who came into this hobby by working on old school arcade machines, that this new topic of learning has been very interesting to me. I'm hoping that I can keep rolling with it and have this game up and running while enjoying both the legacy arcade parts with the newer PC back-end. It's just some really cool stuff!
