I don’t find video games much fun anymore

With a lot of games, if you die you can start right back at the exact moment you died, which makes dying not that big of a threat. And a lot of these games don't have a life count either, so you can die over and over again as well without the threat of a Game Over.

I think this is a function of the 80+ hour game model. How much would it suck if you were 80% done with Fallout 3 and you had a game over and had to start form the beginning?

LOL well this is true...
I was more referring to the action games like "Batman: Arkham Asylum" or "God of War". And I am not implying having to start all over from the beginning. But you know, like the PS1 and DC days. You would have to start from your last save point. I am not implying that it is a more superior way to design a game either, I am just making a point that the threat of dying for the most part no longer exists in most games.

I guess I never plan to grow up. I love games, and I'd like to think they love me :) I play a fair share of video games - maybe an hour a night. I go through phases... I'll play tonnes of old arcade games for a few months, then I will go back to my xbox, then I'll dig out the SNES... really, the only thing is that I've gotten lazier. I know where my C64 is, but it's faster for me to download an emu and the games than it is for me to go out to the shed, grab the ladder, and go up into the attic to get it. Jumpman - now there is a wicked game.

What I meant was actual Nintendo made 2D Mario games. Theres quite a few, and they have all done really well. They will continue to do well, even 20 yrs from now, because the gameplay is challenging & fun.
There are however other platformers that are also very good. There are of course, many really bad ones too. A lot of times, they failed due to a combination of poor jumping formulas, slow speed, poor control due to having to wait for animation frames, poor collision detection, and more.
The Mario games being one of the top platformers, much to the great amount of control and speed of the game. Sonic's speed helped it to get good recognition, however, due to its severely limited depth of gameplay, it never was or ever will be as popular as the Mario series.

Great Musical compositions, no matter how old they are, are timeless.
Remember, we are talking about game music too. No recording faults, such as in the earlier musical recordings.
What we are talking about, is music that evokes some sort of feeling or even a story, without a single word. A droning repeating run of 'fly beats', evokes no real emotion. Thats why you wont hear that in the latest Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Starwars movies. Each movie score is both atmospheric, and contains sounds and compositions that convey emotions that would otherwise not be so present. Watch the movies without the score / sound, and it will be a different experience.
Im not saying every game has poor compositions, but a lot of them out there do,
and it makes the game suffer as a result. The best gameplay can be ruined by poor sounds.. and the most basic graphics possible, but with excellent sounds, can create an experience that transcends the graphical limitations.

I just turned 39 and probably love gaming more than ever. Part of the reason is that I stopped being a gaming elitist...what I mean by that is I would only play computer games and emulated classics. I refused to play console games, deriding them as too childish. My friend who I have known since grade 4 would bug me yearly...starting in the late 80s (and admittedly i played a bit of NES with my lil bro just not much) with have you tried game "X"...that game might have been Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger and I would laugh...those games are for kids!
Well about 4 years ago I got off my high horse as I was in a bit of a gaming funk...I had just won Oblivion (awesome game) and was burnt out of WoW and thought Id give it a chance. Worst case I walked away with the same opinion...the games are for kids...then I tried them and was hooked. The first game I tried was Chrono Trigger. Then I tried Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy XII and Ogre Tactics and lets just say all those years of bypassing console/handheld games means I have a library of possibilities and its been awesome.
My current favourite games run a gamut of platforms/genres:
- Oblivion (yes this many years later and modded out this game is still *fun)) PC
- Civilization 5/Galactic Civilizations II (PC)
- Etrian Odyssey 3 (Nintendo DS)
- Class of Heroes (PSP)
- Ogre Tactics remake (PSP)
- Demon's Souls (PS3)
- Pokemon Black (dont laugh...) (DS)
- Rune Factory 3 (DS)
- Arcade Cab (Arcade games/Dreamcast/Playstation)
Wow...what better time to be a gamer?
