playstation 1 swap trick

I have an older model PlayStation.  How exactly does the Playstation Swap Trick work when trying to play a backup?  I googled it but it mostly covers the new PSOne (little white one)

Its been years and years.. but if I recall its on first disk spindown you put in the copy until the laser tracks back then original untill it spins back up for just a second or two then back to copy.

Its not hard once you get the.sounds down. Even my sister could do it to play megaman legends.

Find an Action Replay disc. That's the easiest way.

I think the disc swap only worked with the early bios models, then later you would have to use one of these (At least I could never get the disc swap to work on mine, and was told mine was too new of a model):

After these became popular, Sony removed the back port on later models, all that would work was a mod chip.

At least that is my understanding of things. 

Also, the disc swap as I remember it was as cotmm68030 described, except you had to shove a spring in the lid switch to bypass the door when you open it up. (you could also open it and override the switch itself to bypass it as well).

Yeah I didn't mention the spring because it seemed a little obvious since it won't do anything with the lid open.

if you plan on swapping instead of modding, another thing to keep in mind is that you want your original disc to have as many audio tracks as possible, if your game uses redbook audio. It seems that when the TOC is scanned on the original it notes how many tracks the disc has, and if your burnt disk tries to play redbook audio on a track number higher than the source has, it will fail to play. I might be getting some of the details incorrect, as it's probably been 10-12 years since I did it.

That might be why I never got it to work for me. I was always using a free disc I got from Pizza Hut.

I got it figured out and played the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of some Mortal Kombat Trilogy last night.  Gotta play some Jet Moto 3 tonight!

COTMM was a great help.  You gotta put a real disc in, wait for it to speed up, when it slows down, put your burned one in, when it slows down, but the real on back in for a quick second and then put the burned one back in.  Works like a charm. 

I did have to burn my backup twice, I found that when you burn it at the slowest speed (1x) that it plays better, when I burned it at the fastest speed it skipped a lot and wouldn't get to any gameplay.

There is something about doing the swap trick that is satisfying.  I always felt a little cheap after modding. Beyond the fact I was playing burned discs.

Installing it was another headache, however...

sweet deal... i got get away with buying it til after christmas though...  wife will see it on the bank statement  but 9 bucks shipped is an awesome deal and ill have to get it.
