Swear words not allowed in high scores on arcade machines
markronz:
So my friend, who is a writer, emailed me a question. Sadly, I do not know the answer but I thought the fine folks on this website might have an idea! Anyone know what video games wouldn't let you do this? Or what they said when you tried?
--- Quote ---Hey Mark,
I'm, um, writing a poem about Pac-Man (or just high scores in general) and I have a question--do you remember when or what video games stopped letting people use bad initials like ASS or FUK for their high score names? Do you remember what the machines said when you tried to do that?
Thanks!
J

Thanks!
EightBySix:
I remember one game used to say "Initials naughty"... Burnin' Rubber possibly.
It amuses me that someone was employed to come up with all the rude combinations of 3 letters when making the game :laugh2:
RayB:
Most of them allowed the words. Computer memory was too small and precious to waste on a database of swear words to blacklist.
Turnarcades:
I've only found modern games do this - console games, later arcade games and frustratingly, many pub quiz machines. I actually enjoy purposely mis-spelling rude words to go on Touchmaster machines without censoring!
leapinlew:
Furthermore, Pacman/Ms.Pacman didn't allow you to enter initials.
