Melamine?
Thom:
I'm in the initial planning stages of my first MAME cabinet. I'm leaning toward using NorthCoast Custom Arcade's "Ultimate Arcade II" plans as a start for the cabinet. I can't find 5/8" MDF anywhere around here, so I'll be using 3/4". A Lowe's store in my area has 3/4" 2-sided White Melamine for just $0.99 a sheet more than regular Melamine ($32.97 for a 3/4" x 49" x 97" sheet).
What are the pros/cons (if any) of using Melamine, as opposed to laminating regular MDF?
One other question, while I'm at it. In regards to laminating, I'd be starting with a 3/4" piece of MDF. I'd add the thickness of the laminate to the piece, then I'd use a 3/4" piece of T-molding on the edge. Wouldn't the laminate stick out past the T-molding? Or is the laminate so thin that this isn't an issue?
Thanks,
Thom

Melamine is very thin and almost a non issue in adding to the size of the MDF. The thinness is a problem as it can chip very easy. Look up info on cutting melamine covered MDF and you will probably find info on the blade to use to cut it and info on taping and other methods to reduce chipping. It is best cut on a table saw where the blade depth can be controlled.

I have built 2 cabs one in 3/4 MDF and another in 5/8 particle board and if you are going to laminate the sides the particle board will be fine and less weight. Then you can choose the colors you want instead of being stuck with the white if that's not your preference. Good luck with your project.

The laminate I'm using is almost 1/16 the inch. I used 5/8 wood and with laminate on both sides it was just about equal to 3/4. If you only put it on one side and paint the other, I'd say you could get away with 3/4 inch wood though.

Melamine only works if you like the limited color choice. I wouldn't personally want a white cabinet. I suppose if you are putting massive side art on, then it wouldn't be quite as bad though.
