Favourite 1 on 1 fighting game?
eds1275:
What's your favourite? My vote has got to be for MK 1 & 2. Besides the nostalgia/good memories, top notch ports to home consoles, and intense media coverage [good coverage in all the video game magazines, bad coverage in the news and such - which made it cooler because it was "bad"] I think it has got to be one of the evenest playing fields, player for player. The "special moves" were in there to spice it up, and you can fight the same way with each character [more or less]. The specials are different for each character and gives each one a unique feel, as opposed to some characters that were so useless they are near-unplayable [zangief comes to mind - has anyone actually ever done one of his moves??? lol] I also think that the block button was a cool idea. Having a button instead of holding away isn't common in games and it adds to it. And all in all I think the characters had deeper back stories than in many other games, and that made you want to play through with each one.
I'd love to hear which are your favourites and why. Unless it's because you can hadoken faster than anyone and it makes you win every time.

I never liked the mortal kombat series.. I'm not sure why. I tried giving it a chance, but I remember everyone talking about it because of the blood more than the fun. I have many more fond memories around street fighter and the crazy rainbow hacked ones. I never liked Zangied, but I have met people since that can kick ass with that character. I think my favorite fighting games (and i'm going to include console) were
Soul Calibur II for Gamecube - I loved playing with Link
Soul Calibur I for Dreamcast - The first 3d fighter I really liked
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - So many characters so much fun
Snk vs Capcom 2 - I loved having my Kim, Vega, Ken team
King of the Fighter 2004 - First kof I played, tons of fun at the time
X-Men vs Street Fighter - What can I say? I loved comics..
Guilty Gear (the ones that came out on the Naomi Board)
Tobal No. 1 (I haven't had time to appreciate No. 2)

MK1 was cool for its looks, and fun... but, it was way too limited.
MK2 was too cartoony for my taste, but it did have some nice new characters.
SF IIce was cool for its time, but eventually, the game wore thin over time.
MK3 was more fun than above, because of the combo system, speed of the game,
and humorous violence. SFII was like a Disney childs game comparatively.
Killer Instinct 1 - Probably my alltime Favorite. The depth is greater than
most all other fighters combined. The combo system is nearly limitless to your
imagination. You can probably make 100 possible combos per character.
Combine 3 types of specials, with several linkers, and 3 or so enders.
Does not stop there... Each ender can be pre-held, and then released...
which creates a faster more damaging. More? You can make "Broken-Combos",
by stringing specials and regular attacks together. These are unbreakable, but
very difficult to string together well.
Combo Breaker system! Unlike most fighters, you Can break out of a combo,
but it takes a lot of skill. You have to preform the correct special move, with
the correct button. One in Three chance, but, if you are aware of the moves
being done to you, you will know which button to use.
Breaker Rewards: If you break a combo, you get special powers. One, is
a Shadow power attack. Many of your special moves will go further, are twice as
fast, have a cool shadow trail effect behind you, do more damages. Also,
when you do hold and release moves, you make a high damage shadow combo.
Some characters who shoot projectiles, may get 3x the projectiles instead
of a single.
Stun / Dizzy: Certain levels of damage will cause the Opp to be stunned. Yet,
they can snap out of it if they wiggle the stick fast enough.
Ultra Combo: If the Opps is almost dead, you can add a move to your combo
to preform a very long unbreakable ultra combo.
Last Chance: If you run out of life, yet snap out of it due to the opp waiting too
long, ...you are more dangerous, as all your moves do more damages.
The next Fav in line would be Tekken III. However, Tekken 3 is a tad clunky
in its execution.

For me its got to be Marvel vs Capcom 2, with street fighter alpha 3 and rival schools somewere behind that.
But im loving the newer ones, like Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, MK vs DC universe and DBZ Burst limit. Not to big on tekken 6 but ive never been to much of a tekken man, i loved number 2 tho.
There were some awesome ones on the PS1 aswell, like X-men mutant academy, soul blade and scarred fist, there was another game aswell which had a massive 3d playfield and you like did kind of DBZ style fireballs and stuff but for the life of me i cant remember what its called, i only ever played a demo
WhereEaglesDare:
Real easy.... ULTIMATE MORTAL KOMBAT 3 for Sega Genesis. It is simply the best fighting game ever.
