A 12V amplifier makes sense if you plan to power it from the computer power supply.

Otherwise, I would recommend an AC powered amp instead.

For example:
Pyle Home PCA1
It's only 2.2W @1% THD, but that should be plenty loud for MAME.
Higher wattage models are available if you think you need more power.

Usually just for powering (charging) usb items.  Sort of like USB on a wall charger.

That's it? How stupid. I thought it was some sort of feedback/control, like what one would find on UPS or something. Makes sense since it's so damn close to the power jack and it does say "OUT". Still pretty lame.
