Moon Patrol Multigame - DONE....
« on: June 11, 2004, 08:21:19 am »
Picked this up for a song in Atlanta.  I am torn on what to do with it.  Pretty it up and resell as a vigilante? Sell as is? (Everything works and it plays great, no burn, etc.) Strip the black paint off the sides and go back to dedicated moon patrol?  I need some creative suggestions here.

Moon Patrol is a pretty cabinet.  Great artwork.  Plus I have a new little girl that might love playing that game.

It's one of my favorite games so I'm a little biased but I'd try to turn it back into a Moon Patrol.

I think you should restore it to a Moon Patrol Cab.   I like that game.  Much better artwork I think.

I'd want to fix it up as a Moon Patrol, because I like that game quite a bit.  I wouldn't expect the sideart to turn out well so I'd plan to restencil it.  However, sometimes Moon Patrol sells for a good (low) price in nice condition, because it isn't as desirable as a lot of williams games.  So it is probably more cost effective to just buy a nice one.  However if you can find a good deal on some of the parts to make it a MP again it might not cost you too much.

My first choice would be restoration. Moon Patrol is a great classic. Second choice..... Multi Williams kit!

Hey, at least that's closer to the intent of the cab than Vigilante!  ;)
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

I like vigilante more but its orignally a moon patrol so u should make it what it is.

but please save the wiring harness board sideart cpo and bezal for a sell on ebay its all anyone would need :)

slap it all on a generic cab and it look good :)

You can make a new control panel and wiring harness well that 1 might be a bit tricky

but goodluck with your decesion  ;D

I'm a huge Vigilante fan but the Moon Patrol cabinet is worth so much more.

You can send me the Vigilante PCB if you want ... I could use a spare ;D :P

I say...

Strip down the black, see if you can save the art underneath.  Since it's really simple art, it should not be that hard.

See if you can get a boardset on eBay.  I see them for ~$20 all the time.  If not, put a computer running Mame in there and make it dedicated.

Finding the controls for the CP might be a bit hard, but it doesn't look like they hacked the CP too much.

I may be looking to sell it (the pcb) as well as the marquee, bezel, and if by chance I can save them, the sideart and cpo.  What do you think is a fair asking price?

hmmm ... I'd say $50- $60 for a Vigilante kit would be a fair asking price  ... you don't see those everyday on eBay (assuming you can get the side art off without damaging it).

You should be able to get that on eBay easily. (It's been weeks since I seen a Vigilante board for sell on eBay).

I'd say $10 - marquee, $10 - monitor bezel, $10 - side art, and $19 - $29 for the PCB cleaned up.

Hopefully it finds a good home  :) (If I wasn't in need of a UV EPROM Eraser ... I'd make you an offer but my cash is going towards that this month and they aren't cheap  :-\ )

I personally would pretty it up and leave it as is. Moon Patrol is more common than Vigilante, which is a fun game anyway, and that cabinet has good sideart, rare for a conversion game.

In general I don't reccomend "unconverting" good working conversions with full artwork, save the unconversions for the deaed stuff, or the stuff with half the artwork ripped off.

Basically, if you unconvert that thing you will be minus a perfectly good set of Vigilante sideart, and a Vigilante control panel, and that stuff is not reproed, and that "kit" you pull off the cabinet isn't going to fit anything other than a moon patrol since it has already been cut down to fit one.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Well I found a benefactor that wants a Moon Patrol multigame.  I insisted that he keep the cp as is so I will keep the vigilante 8-way stick, moon patrol button layout, and use a jpac to interface to the jamma harness.

I gave alot of thought to what Paige said, but it all came down to what I could do ($$) with the cabinet.

I started stripping the black off and the art underneath is AWESOME! - No pic yet, but dang it is going to look good.

I have an original marquee and bezel on the way and will be getting the cpo from Arcade Shop here in georgia this weekend.

Will keep everyone posted and thanks for the input.

Here are some new pictures with the artwork revealed.  I am very happy with the way it looks.  A few scuffs here and there but overall very nice.  Still waiting on the bezel and marquee but the jpac is in, the pc is mostly set up.  Also waiting on the soundcard and need to choose a video card.   Enjoy.

CPO is from www.arcadeshop.com here in GA.  It really is well done.  It has the same texture as the original too.  I also got some misc parts from another guy here in GA named Matty.  He buys/restores/sells primarily pinball games, but also deals with video games as well.  He is really a top notch guy.  He picked up the cpo for me so I could get the parts and the cpo from him without having to make two trips.  His website is at www.playpinball.net.  If your in need of a pin or pin repairs he is your man in GA.

OMG, that sideart looks sooo nice  8) Amazing that you can just get the black paint layer off while the artwork stays on.

BTW, what are the dimensions of that Moon Patrol CPO?

It really did come out well.  The dimensions of the CPO are approx. 23" x 15.5"

Updates - "After" - I have new coin inserts and plastic to install as well as the locks.

I ended up using rustoleum black satin paint and Zissner clear laquer.  I will post a etter pic affter the locks etc are installed, but the finish really came out nice.  It has just about the same texture and gloss as did areas of the cabinet that had paint but were hidded from wear and sun etc like just inside the marquee and inside the cabinet under the control panel.  Seems to be pretty tough as well.  I am going to clearcoat the sides using the Zissner clearcoat as well.

NOTE - Beware the Moon Patrol CPO adhesive!  Took me 3 hours to get the cp clean!  Yeesh!

The joystick hole was a bit off center and a little rough so I patched it from behind with some sheet metal and jb weld.  I then added a little bondo to level out the top.  I will recut the joystick hole as per the cutout on the CPO.

I don't think moon patrol is in the arcade art library yet and it looks like the side are would be easy to vectorize.
