Help with Scanlines............please !
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:29:16 am »
I've looked and can't seem to find an answer
for what I'm looking for.
I'm using the newest MaLa v173 and MAME v124.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to
turn on scanlines. Does the option not exist?
Am I not seeing it ?

Any help would be great.

(compiling a version of MAME with no warnings/
lag screens is next)........but for now easy
stuff like the scanline issue.

If you haven't done so already, you'll need to put scanline files in your artwork directory (if you're not sure where to get them, I'm pretty sure you can download a pack somewhere on mameworld). In the mame.ini look for "effect". I think the default setting is "none". Change none to nameofscanline.png.

Found the files @ MR DO's Arcade.
http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_supp.html

My Mala + MAME PC is downstairs in my Donkey Kong Jr cabinet.
I'll go toss these in later and edit the ini file.

Thanks again

Haven't got around to testing this out yet, but I will this weekend.
A few questions before I begin.
Has anyone used the scanline package from the link above ? Can you suggest the file you thought looked the best ?
Also (a stupid question I know) do I leave the folder in tact and place the folder + contents into my artwork folder, OR extract all the images
and put them into my artwork folder ?

And so I'm clean pick the image I like, hope it looks good, and simply change the ini file to the matching file name..........BOOM! Scanlines !

Here's a handy guide: http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/MAME_CRT_Simulation

You will get better results (and effortlessly) from a hardware scanline generator such as the SLG3000 though (IMHO) as it adds the scanlines to the picture that's being output to your screen, i.e. the last step. But it will only look good on full screen video, so no vertical games on a horizontal monitor.

Here's some example pictures of the SLG3000 (output 640x480 VGA to an Acer LCD screen):

The unit itself:

Mars Matrix (Dreamcast):

Twinkle Star Sprites (Dreamcast):

Ketsui (MAME):

More info on my site: http://www.emphatic.se/news.html

The SLG3000 costs €49 + shipping.

Thanks guys for the help.
I got the scanlines working perfectly.
I didn't think I'd pop for it like I did, but it really was cool.
I wanted them because I thought it was "authentic" but it really looked awesome.
Only thing was it slowed my PC right down, to the point the games wouldn't play the way they were supposed to.
So I had to do without them, but I can tell you all future installs (providing the PC works) will get them.

Glad you got it figured out!

Sucks that you can't use them on your current PC though.

I honestly forget the specs right now. I'll go look shortly.
It's a P4 I know that.

EDIT - I think this is the PC (it's  the place I got it from anyway)
Computers:
IBM Netvista Tower Computer $50
Intel Pentium4 1.6Ghz
512Mb RAM (upgradeable to 1Gig)
20GB Hard Drive
CD Writer Drive
2 Front USB Ports, 2 USB Ports at Back
integrated Network & Sound
Keyboard, Mouse and Power Cable included
Win XP installed, Windows COA Sticker is included
Perfectly working with 90 Days warranty

*** I should add, the games play flawlessly (as best I can tell) now. I've played a few games of Frogger, Ms. PAC MAN, Donkey Kong serries, etc.
But when I put the scanlines effect on, it went slow. The music, everything slowed down. I can try again, perhaps re-boot. Make sure no other processes are running, etc. ****

Your machine is underpowerd (processor and ram) for current MAME as it is. Adding bells and whistles will just drown it.

I'm using MAME v124 w/ the newest version of MaLa.
But I figured it wasn't fast enuff.
Ah well, I now know what to do and how to do it.
Most certain all future projects that use an LCD will get the "scanline touch!"
(providing the PC is fast enuff!)
