Title: RIP - The Dead Celebrity Thread
Post by: Ginsu Victim on December 29, 2015, 12:30:42 am
This is now the official thread for posting "rest in peace" messages

Lemmy Kilmister 1945-2015
As a longtime metalhead, this is a kick to the nads.

Damn, that's a shame. I always assumed he was indestructible.

I always loved the guy's sense of humour. He never took himself too seriously, which is a rarity in the music business.

I never got into Motorhead but this guy was an icon.  Musicians dying seems to be going around.  Today John Bradbury the drummer from the Specials passed away.  Both were huge to their respective genres and both will be sorely missed.

I was a big fan seeing as how I listen to both kinds of music... hard rock and heavy metal, but let's not cry a  river here.  The guy made it to 70 and for the kind of life he lived that's a pretty good run.

He should've lived to 110 and just exploded on stage to end his final show.

He considered Motorhead to be a punk band.

For the last (several to many) years, he'd be almost always seen at the Rainbow bar, playing touchscreen games.  I heard that the machine was recently moved to his house down the block to enjoy at home as he couldn't make it to the Rainbow.  That's mighy nice of them.

Jack & Coke was his drink of choice.  I think we can all find time to enjoy at least one in the next night or two.

Just heard he died yesterday.

Just finished listening to his new album too.

It's a surreal feeling right now.

Gonna miss that guy.  Loved it when he used to turn into a golden Eagle at parties.  The guild will never be the same again.

Seriously though... it really sucks, but then again you forget how old they guys are now.  He was nearly 70!  Bowie was grandpa aged.

Sure, Sure... but I intend to live forever.  I figure if I can hold out for another 30 years or so they can put me in a robot or something.

I look for George Lucas to die next.  Wes Craven caught me off guard, but it seems like whenever these directors start slowing down and/or give up all their pet projects, they die soon after.

Labyrinth is great.  Bowie was perfect in that.

He had some good songs,  a unique singing voice, and a real star-power presence about him.

 Very sad news.

Everybody knows that he sold his soul to the devil in the 50s for a magical set of prescription aviator glasses that allow him to live forever.  Actually Jack Kirby sold his soul and then Stan totally stole the glasses and took credit.  ;)

Here's something to think about..something that I've brought up to friends a few times in recent years.

Right now, there aren't too many bands that have lost all of their original line-up.  (I can think of maybe 2)

It's only a matter of time, and not much now, that there will be no more 'living members' of many classic rock bands....Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, etc..

The good news is, we can still enjoy the music when they're gone.

Prince doesn't particularly surprise me.  He looked like a sickly little man that could get blown away by a stiff breeze 30 years ago.

Chyna either.  Hers is a bit sadder for me because she fell on hard times due to the way HHH got her booted from the company.  I always hoped at one point she would pull her act together and have another run in the WWE worthy of the legend that she is.  She's still not in the WWE hall of fame btw..... frikkin Sunny is in the WWE hall of fame... the woman who's job was to stand in the corner and look pretty.

I don't really agree with his assessment that the reason she isn't in there is because they can't trust her on stage.  They inducted the Ultimate Warrior and even when he was on good terms with the company he was a lunatic and they never knew what he was going to say.  All sources point to HHH, Stephanie, X-Pac and all the weirdness that revolved around their tangled relationships with each other.

I finally watched that Kevin Smith story after hearing about it for years.  Was it supposed to be funny?  I generally only believe 10% of what he says anyway but even if that was 100% true....?  He was hired to do a job and got offended that he wasn't asked to do anything besides what he was hired for?  Prince wears the outfits he was known for wearing?  An active Jehovah's Witness proselytizes?

Seemed like he'd toss out a "---smurfing--- prince" every time the story dragged and every beta in the crowd would applaud enthusiastically.

He had in in neutral, not in park.  So this isn't the typical Jeep sliding out of park and squishing you scenario.  Also Anton's driveway was a steep slope.

Either he was late getting to rehearsals and forgot to open the gates and jumped out of his jeep, without engaging the parking brake fully, or the hand brake failed completely.

We end up doing dumb things when we are late and rushing, and I think this is what happened.  Sad, unfortunate and a lesson for us all.

I know I won't be enjoying the next Star Trek film.

There is a recall out on those Jeeps because you cannot easily tell if you have it in park or not.  So it may not have been his fault.

In any case, it sucks.  I enjoyed his performances as Chekov

"The affected vehicles, which also include 2012-14 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s, use an unconventional lever to shift the automatic transmission. Instead of moving to a different position with each gear, the lever returns to a center position. The driver must look at the shifter to make sure the proper gear is selected."

That's probably just about the dumbest design ever.
Title: Re: RIP - The Dead Celebrity Thread
Post by: lilshawn on June 21, 2016, 05:30:36 pm
I have a 2015 Chrysler 200 sport with the as mentioned "unconventional lever" shifter. As far as i could have seen... this really shouldn't have been an issue with how the electonic ebrake/parking brake system is set up now. (his vehicle must have the regular kind of manually actuated parking brake system... or a system that needs software update to alter it's behaviour.)

the activation system I have consists of a toggle switch that you can pull up to activate, or push down into the panel to deactivate. (similar to newer power window switches)

with my car, if the door is opened and the shift lever is in anything but park, (reverse, neutral, drive, or sport mode) the emergency park brake AUTOMATICALLY activates as soon as the door is opened. i've never tried this at speed, but if you're rolling and you open the door it does stop you.

if the door is opened first and the lever is actuated from park, the parking brake will AUTOMATICALLY activate.

it can be manually overridden again after it activates. (for instance if you are trying to look out under the door to line up with some car ramps) simply push the button down.

other features of said parking brake include... if it's activated manually while in drive mode, it will lock the brakes down, but will automatically deactivate when you press on the gas. (i assume for steep hill starts)

For burnout mode, (I believe only available on the sport model) you have to pull and hold up the switch for the brake. Start your burnout and release the switch lever (only need to hold the first few seconds) then the rear brakes will stay on until you depress the switch at which time the brakes release.

as for the gear selection system, Mine is a interlocked detent rotary switch. not an up down type selection. you must have the brake applied to rotate the switch from park. each gear selection has it's own detent.

once into the "moving" gears they can be freely switched between the gears, reverse.. neutral.. drive without pressing the brake. vehicle movement is monitored and if the speed is too high to shift (for instance drive to reverse while still moving) the selector WILL move there, but the transmission will not shift to the selected gear to prevent damage. if this interlock has activated you must stop, shift to park and then back to gear again.

as it sits...it's a good system. it truly is, really, idiot proof.

I believe quite honestly his death could have been prevented with a simple system update. Period.

P.S.

If you don't know, you can simply call the dealership service department anytime and give them your VIN... they will tell you over the phone if you have outstanding recalls that need to be done. recalls regardless of age are done free of charge. I just got a recall done for a 2008 nissan with like 250,000 on it for a suspension spring issue. replaced both front springs and didn't cost me a penny.

so do it. do it. do it now. don't get your ass run over. call and find out if you have a recall. get it fixed before it kills you.

 :soapbox:

That sounds like a lot of needless complication to compensate for an inherent design flaw.

What the hell were they thinking....

Title: Re: RIP - The Dead Celebrity Thread

I wouldn't say it's a design flaw per se...they just underestimated how retarded people can be and still manage to get a driver's license.

When the design of a shifter isn't "you move to position x and it shifts to gear x" then it's a design flaw.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Title: Re: RIP - The Dead Celebrity Thread

When the design of a shifter isn't "you move to position x and it shifts to gear x" then it's a design flaw.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

but it does. unless you are trying to do something you shouldn't, then no, it doesn't. (for obvious reasons.) the aforementioned toggle shifter that  was used on some of the 2012 to 2014 300's is an exception. it was only used with one particular transmission/engine combo (not on all models)  since 2015 model year they have been changed to the rotary style knob. I haven't used that specific shift system before, but i'm pretty sure if you are stopped and want to put it in park, you could just hold the leaver up for a few seconds and it would default to park. while yes it's not a kerchunk okay we are here in this gear and have a positive stop system to ensure we are in park or drive or whatever kind of system, the onus is still on the operator to ensure their car is secure before leaving it. Much the same way I wouldn't place a running lawnmower on a hill and walk away.

Idiot proof something, and the world builds a better idiot. By all this idiot proof logic I suppose a column shifter that doesn't have a big spring attached to the dashboard to pull the leaver back to park if you take your hand off it... has a design flaw because it can be left in gear. I suppose a door that doesn't have a pulley system attached to it to pull the door closed when you sit in the seat has a design flaw, since you could leave the door open and fall out. I mean how far do you go to make something safe enough where the most lazy and inept person on the planet couldn't possibly kill themselves with this. Do you want to get out of your car and go... or do you want to do a 47 step vehicle movement interlock procedure so that the car knows damn well you are good and ready to get out?

The point i'm trying to get at is, Anton put his car in X when it should have been in Y... or thought he put it in X when he actually didn't. This isn't the vehicles fault. it doesn't matter what car on the planet you drive manual, automatic, leaver, shifter, or knob. car, truck, motorcycle or bulldozer.. if you leave it in drive, neutral, or reverse and you get out... it's probably going to run you over.  :dunno

I don't feel this is the fault of the vehicle manufacturer. Yes, An underestimation of how lazy, retarded, and inept people can be, showed a situation could occur where this could happen... but it was identified and a fix was put in place to prevent exactly this scenario.

Now, if Anton had taken his vehicle in to have the fix applied...he'd still be alive, regardless of accidentally leaving the vehicle in gear/being lazy/being stupid.

Why are you so determined to defend this poor, poor corporation?

 :dunno

cause it's being made out that it was because an unsafe vehicle did this. vehicles are inherently unsafe machines, no different from a power saw. Let your guard down for one second and your done. Becoming complacent when operating a dangerous ANYTHING can kill you.

Anton was either an idiot who didn't place his vehicle in park before getting out, or he accidentally placed it into gear when he intended not to. i'd like to think the latter, but Americans (sorry) tend to fall into the former category.

either of these scenarios wouldn't have mattered had he done the recall. His death was 100% preventable by either paying due attention and making sure his vehicle was in park before getting out, or if he had done the recall fix on his vehicle, been negligent and STILL manage to come out alive.

his death is 100% senseless and i'm sure 100% brutally painful the whole time he was trapped. It pisses me off that it had to happen because it was with absolute certainty... preventable.
Title: Re: RIP - The Dead Celebrity Thread
Post by: Howard_Casto on June 28, 2016, 03:19:25 pm
I certainly was preventable.... if the car had been designed properly there would have been no confusion... if it was built well there would have been no recall to worry about.

Sorry man but you are on the wrong side of this argument.   Because automobiles are very dangerous machines they have to be designed so even stupid people, who unfortunately still have to drive here in the USA, can work the controls.

My mom bought a brand new Taurus in 2013... there have been FIVE recalls on the stupid thing.  She also couldn't get some of them fixed for some time because Ford was either backed up doing all the recalls, or they couldn't get the part(s) in because, again there are so many recalls.

Considering how extremely hectic an actor's schedule can be I can absolutely see him forgetting or not bothering with the recall.  My mom have to wait SIX MONTHS to get one of them fixed and she was extremely diligent about staying on top of it.

George A Romero, one of the great directors of the horror genre, has left us at age 77. Not many people can say they'd created a genre, but the modern zombie would not be as it is without Night of the Living Dead. He was working on his next film in the series when he died, an artist to the very end.
I don't usually get emotional over celebrity deaths, but I'm writing this in tears. The man's work meant so much to me.
Thank you, George.

Damn.  I guess no more "of the dead" movies.  I really liked the way he snuck in social commentary into all of his films.  It's a shame that horror directors always have some sort of stigma in Hollywood, because this guy should have a stack of Oscars by now.  The original "Dead" trilogy in particular is right up there with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in regards of being one of the best, most influential, set of films of all time.

He was very, very kind to one of my family members many years ago and they held him in high esteem ever since.

We will be imitating his Gomer Pyle voice for years to come.

Yeah, I got $5 on him over hyping that.  Nobody survives a 100% blockage.  And he took the opportunity to plug a reboot that nobody wants.

I'm sure he'll continue to make youtube videos of himself smoking pot and rambling about comic books.  Makes me sorry for his wife and child.

I'm very curious to see if his family allows his body to be thoroughly autopsied.  He was an enigma to ALS researchers, to the point where I heard one announce before a Q&A, "don't ask us about Stephen Hawking, we have no idea how he's still alive."  I've wondered for many years how much brain material was actually functional....

I've wondered for many years how much brain material was actually functional....

see, that's the thing. ALS only affects specialized motor neurons... all the rest of the brain's neurons aren't affected... you basically become trapped in your own body unable to move.

My father passed away at the hands of ALS a couple years ago at the age of 70. It's a ruthless disease that leaves you trapped in your own immovable body. It's nothing short of pure torture.

It was heartbreaking for our family to see my father deteriorate over the course of a couple years. But my Dad gave it hell. And he never once....not even once...complained or felt sorry for himself. It was truly inspiring to see how admirably he fought the disease.

Nothing in life is worth complaining about after seeing someone go though that fight.

I hope that ALS medical research can make a breakthrough soon for future generations.

I've got a friend who is a few years younger than me and we watched it. It really creeped her out. After she went to bed, in the middle of the night... I played dueling banjos on my mandolin from across the house. After a few minutes she just screamed "NOT FUNNY" but I bet she was hiding under a blanket.

I'm pretty sure Marvel will come up with some way to continue the tradition, even if the cameos are like Hitchcock in Lifeboat (http://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/Lifeboat_(1944)_-_Hitchcock%27s_cameo).

That's great. I bet the company execs loved that many of the actors, some of them on the high end of the pay scale, get less time.

No I was playing with my Tonkas in the back yard.  Not TV.  But the next door neighbor used to beat his wife on many occasions.  You could hear the screams from down the street.  Cops came and went.

It was a mix of Twilight Zone and Perry Mason.  Drama indeed.  She didn't leave him after 34 years though.

I'm surprised Albert Finney lasted this long, given his long-time obesity. Even by '81 (Looker, the first I'd seen him) he was looking out of shape and some worn. By The Bourne Ultimatum he looked ready for the hog shed. Great actor, interesting personality.

Similar with Dick Miller. He was looking old in the 50s. Must've chain-smoked at least two packs a day for decades. Looks as he did some good work in earlier decades, the 70s onward parts becoming bit-ier and bit-ier.

Boo.  Lead singer of the Cars died.  Not one of my favorite bands but still a staple of the '80s.

He seemed content, though.

"It's kind of weird because it's like a lifetime," Ocasek told the magazine, looking back at the history of The Cars. "It is a lifetime. I had three families during that time. They are like lives that go by and millions of people and things and artists and writers and business people and fans. ... It's a lot of stuff. It's been a pretty eventful life, I can say."

RIP Rip.

https://www.npr.org/2019/10/07/767788731/rip-taylor-comedian-know-for-his-camp-and-confetti-dies-at-84

Quote
Rip Taylor, the comedian who became a fixture of 1970s game shows with his outrageous antics, flamboyant style and signature confetti-throwing, has died at age 84.

His publicist, Harlan Boll, confirmed Taylor died Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Taylor's spanned more than 40 years and encompassed Broadway, Las Vegas, film and television.

Born Charles Taylor in Washington, D.C., he got his start as a stand-up comic playing clubs in the Catskills after he'd served in the Army during the Korean War.

In a 1992 interview with United Press International, Taylor acknowledged that much of his early material consisted of jokes stolen from USO tours he'd seen.

His first national television appearance came in 1963 on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he became known as the "crying comedian" for a routine in which he cried on stage as he begged the audience to laugh at his jokes.

"I sat on a stool telling jokes, and nobody was laughing," he told UPI in 1992. "In desperation, I pretended to cry as I begged them to laugh. That killed 'em."

Taylor went on to make some 2,000 guest appearances on such shows as The Hollywood Squares, Match Game, The Gong Show and Super Password.
He was also a frequent guest on The Merv Griffin Show, The Tonight Show and Late Night With David Letterman. He also made a cameo on The Monkees.

In the 1970s, Taylor hosted The $1.98 Beauty Show. Created by The Gong Show's Chuck Barris, it was a spoof of traditional beauty pageants, where contestants won such prizes as a bouquet of rotten vegetables, or the top prize of $1.98.

Robert Forster has passed away. That makes two people who passed away right after I watched Jackie Brown again (Sid Haig being the other).

Yeah, I was thinking about him recently, perhaps because of the Jackie Brown mention..... I saw that movie only a few/several months ago, the only Tarantino movie I much care for, and was thinking he looked rough in '97. Smoking all over his face. Still, he made close to 80, though I don't know his faculty status in the last ten years....oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, he had brain cancer......well. Anyways, not until I saw it again a couple/few years ago, I realized I knew him from 1980's Alligator (seen on TV in '81/2). I liked him.

@Ginsu Victim: yes I found that out after reading an obituary, and watched the proffered clip. He seemed cogent. He was a good character actor. Emotional expression in the eyes conveys the heart of things, and he didn't have that. He wasn't 'big'. Like Nicholas Cage. Systemically dead-pan voice and no eye expression. Blech. I think his main fans are latter-day anime folks, for whom the 'thousand-meter stare' is the be all/end all.....

PS: wasn't interested in Breaking Bad.
