Title: I recently learned how to tie my shoes all by myself
Post by: shmokes on February 02, 2010, 06:44:00 pm
If you've been doing it wrong (as I have for more than 25 years), the next few minutes of your life (http://lifehacker.com/5451765/ditch-the-granny-knot-to-tie-your-shoes-more-efficiently) will change it in a small, but kind of awesome way.*

I followed that and I have been tying it right (reef knot) yet they still look like a granny knot and come undone while walking.  I do a non slip knot that starts with starting knot with two passes which holds the lace more securely for the second part of the knot as shown in the video.

I think it depends on the lace and how tight you tie your shoes, versus the type of knot.

I tie them loose so the laces later on wag and loosen out.

Anyone recommend replacement laces for sneakers and formal shoes that do not slip?

Well I've been tying granny knots and switching to the reef knot has been night and day.  I used to tie my shoes over and over and over and over.  I'd frequently stop to tie my shoe and fifteen minutes later stop to tie the same shoe again.  If I was ever in a situation where I really didn't want my shoes coming untied I would double-knot them.

I saw this video a week or two ago.  Now I usually tie my shoes one time in the morning and untie them when I take them off at night.  Nothing more.

Haven't bothered clicking that link. They make shoes laces quite long nowadays, so i just double tie them. They never come undone  :dunno

I always wondered why my laces comes loose all the time. I'm using GRANNY STYLE  :banghead:
I'm gonna practice this REEF (while smoking a riffer) knot.  :P

I tie a reef knot, but loop it around twice in Step 3 of the video.  The knot still comes undone with a simple pull of the loose end, but will not come undone at all through normal shoe usage.  It stays on much better, and is a small change to make the knot tighter, doesnt bulk it up like a double knot.

Someone showed me that in Junior high, and Ive tied my shoes like that ever since.

People really have this much of an issue with tying their shoes  ???   I've been tying my own shoes for well over 30 years now and never really had a problem.

That's probably because you happen to tie a reef knot.  Unless you were originally taught to tie your shoes by someone who specifically knows the difference between a reef and granny knot, your chances of tying one over the other are 50/50.  They are tied in virtually the same way and they look virtually the same.  Even if you learn to tie your shoes from someone who ties a reef knot you are just as likely to tie a granny knot, and the person teaching you will say, "Good job!  You got it!"

Ok, i decided to have a look at that vid. I must have some kinda rare form of dyslexia, because i can't tell the difference. I tried tying the laces both ways, and both ways they look pretty neat to me. So i'll stick with double tying...

Alternatively, when you tie the knot, just try pulling it tight! ::)

I guess runners tend to be anal-rententive.

The funny thing about rolling your eyes is that you are wrong.  Pulling a granny knot tight won't solve the problem because the knot loosens itself of its own accord.  Trust me--I'm an expert on this.  I have 25 years of experience.  A reef knot is self-tightening so it won't come untied unless the lace is pulled (or snagged).  A granny knot, no matter how tight you make it, will work its way loose just from walking.  And since the reef knot is exactly the same as easy to tie as a granny knot, it is asinine to "solve" the problem by tying a tighter granny knot.  It's actually less effort to tie your shoe correctly to begin with.

My shoes are loose enough that I don't ever tie them but on rare occasions when they finally become too loose.   I just slip them on.  I love it.

But I've been doing reefs my life when I do retie them.

I must presume I have always used the reef knot as I have never had any problems loading MDF into the back of a pick-up, but I do know a few people who are constantly retying, so I guess they use the granny method.

OK, I had to bite on that, but still, I have never had a major "shoelace loosening  problem...    :dunno

Velcro shoes suck.   My kids wore them when they were too young to tie their shoes.   The Velcro gets all crud-ed up and worn out faster than the shoe.

I too had been tying my shoes wrong.
I have a pair of shoes that will not stay tied, I thought they needed new strings, but thanks to this video, I now have tight shoes!
Thanks shmokes, good find!

Ashamed to admit, but all these years I'd been double tying because I could never keep my laces tied. And I always wondered why my laces would want to run vertical. All these years I was doing the granny knot, and never thought much of it, nor did I know a simple switch makes a world of difference.
Been wearing work boots the past couple days with the reef knot and they haven't come loose yet.
Learn somethin new each day... just took me 40 years to learn this one ;)
