I admit, I haven't set foot in an actual Arcade for a while now.
I was wondering, do they still make "new" arcade games (besides Golden Tee)? I know it's a dying business, but I wasn't sure if it was "dead" yet.

Namco's done a neat game with vertical 16:9 screens where cute little tanks take on giant monsters called 'Tank! Tank! Tank!' looks neat. Tank! Tank! Tank! gameplay footage - Namco private show 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cBgAfrQzYM#)
Then there's Namco's PS3 'System 357' based Razzing Storm which looks like a single screen spiritual successor to Time Crisis.
That's just to name a few. Stern still makes new pinball tables. Sega makes games. There are still arcade trade shows where new machines are demonstrated. Capcom and Aksys games like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue still go to arcades 6-12 months before their console ports as well.
There are lots more examples if you go digging.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering if they changed from the 4:3 ratio if they are still making new games.
So I assume MAME will keep updating to include new games as they're being made.

Mamedevs don't focus on new games. They don't want to emulate something that is still making money for people. That would certainly bring a focus to Mame that no one wants to see. Mamedevs generally focus on games that are at least 4 or 5 years old to avoid any issues.

I meant that as new games come out in the Arcades, new games will come out in MAME (although they may be older games). Rather than MAME effectively stopping because arcade games have stopped production. :cheers:

Modern machines use wide screen monitors and just like all other media, arcade games went high def. Besides widescreen monitors are much easier and cheaper to get. There's really no notivation to go 4:3 for new machines.
Sega actually re-released Daytona USA this fall, it's a direct largely unupgraded port but runs at HD wide screen resolutions with anti-aliasing now, runs off the Celeron 2.0ghz powered RingWide platform. (So same textures and polygons) Kinda neat to see a game from 1993 get re-released because it still manages to be relevant.

New games still come out in japan where arcades are alive and well, and there are translations of their games that we sometimes get but arcades are all but gone in many places across north america.

In my local arcade (which is actually a good arcade with plenty of classic machines, pinball tables, ect), they've added Guitar Hero and 2 Deal or No Deal machines. So we are still getting a few new machines in the US. Nothing like the good old days, though.

Most arcades don't keep stuff up to date, I presume it's a combination of cost and that any arcade still operating can make money off of their existing hardware. You still see Daytona USA in arcades everwhere, Time Crisis 3, 2 or Crisis Zone, House Of The Dead 2-4, Outrun, Crazy Taxi.
I think one reason is that a lot of people go to the arcade for the 'attraction', sitting in a driving cab, shooting the guns, hitting the DDR pad and stuff like that. "Graphics" isn't the draw like it is on home console games. This is just my experience with arcade installations in theaters however, but I rarely see fighting games, despite me knowing that fighting games are popular as hell.

Most recent games I've seen are all LCD widescreen... there's yet another hunting game. Theres a video pinball based on West Coast Choppers (or Orange County Choppers?) Multi-game machines... Guitar Hero. Some shooter based on Playstation 3 hardware...
