I have tried using the search function but I am getting alot of results for the 360 joystick and not the xbox 360 controller so my apologies if this question has been asked over and over again.
I would like to use a controller for mame for the time being and I have heard that the wired xbox 360 controller works with windows right out of the box. Will it work with Mame32fx? Does anyone here use this type of set up? Have any comments or suggestions?
thanks a lot

I have tried three different types of XBOX360 controllers:
Wireless controllers and Tekken 6 Wireless fight stick using the Microsoft USB PC Receiver
Custom made HAPP arcade fight stick using a pad hacked wired controller
For all setups Windows and MAME recognizes each as a Joypad so you should be just fine.

they work fine yes

Though in Windows XP the driver needs to be installed seperately, it's not built into XP as it is in Vista and 7 if I recall correctly. But it's a minor complication.

sorry to bring up an old post, but better than starting a new one right?
Is there any significant drawback to using xbox 360 controllers over an i-pac? Minus some of the benefits like volume up/down, sleep/power, etc, are there any limitations of the xbox controllers in mame? Will I have USB ID issues with the sticks registering for the wrong player? Any problems hooking up 4 of them simultaneously?

Cost seems like a big drawback to me. Are you talking about hacking a 360 controller or just using it? If you want the wireless, then cost is not an issue since an Ipac is not wireless capable, obviously.

I'd be getting the controllers hacked, then set up on a switcher to go between Xbox and PC and controlled by pushbuttons on a CP. The alternative that would cost more would be the x360 controllers connected to Xbox and an ipac connected to PC on a switch to the CP. I'm guessing I'd lose some admin buttons but I want to make sure there wouldn't be an ID issues or keypress issues with using a hacked controller on a PC. Is it overkill?
Basically I'd like to add the ability to play SFIV on Xbox and the upcoming Mortal Kombat using my existing CP.
Ah but I forgot to mention, I wanted to leave options open for connecting a 3rd and 4th panel/controller for 4P games. I was originally dead-set on getting an IPac4, but the idea of having an Xbox360 on a switch has complicated things-

A potentially silly question, but I should ask anyway, there's no way to connect an ipac directly to an xbox 360 is there? I noticed that ultimarc has ps3 adaptors, any rumors of a 360 adaptor?

I don't think Andy was able to get that support... M$ is stingy with the 3rd party peripheral licensing.
