Title: Artist needed for side art and possible marquee touch up -- Tapper themed
Post by: markronz on January 21, 2010, 12:57:44 pm
Hello everyone-
I am looking to get some side art created for my new arcade machine that I am making.   I've been referring to this new machine and the "MAME Tapper".

So let me go over some details.   The cab actually has a wooden panel look to it.   This is not an actual image of the arcade machine, but it's the closest I could find online.   See the bottom of this cabinet for a feel of how the "wood" of the arcade machine looks:

This is how the empty arcade machine shell looked when I received it, and it does look pretty cool in person, so I decided to leave it.   Overall, I've decided to go with a back and red theme.   Control panel will have a black background and red (illuminated) controls.

For the marquee, I have a vectorized piece of art already started for this.   I could provide this file to anyone should there be any takers on this project.  The jpg version is attached below just to give you an idea.   I had a friend of mine start the art work for the marquee for me, but unfortunately he does not have any more time to dedicate to this project.   Essentially, it's similar to the original Tapper marquee.  He just changed the colors to be black and red, and added Mame along the top.  Also, the beer has it's logo removed.    I don't really care for Budweiser, so I opted for a more generic no-name beer instead.   I guess this marquee would need to be updated a bit in the end.   I'd like to see the beer a little better looking, and then whatever other changes need to be made to touch it up a bit and make it smoother.   I have this in an AI file format at home, so everything you see in the jpg is vectorized.

The main part of the work, is the side art.   I don't have a 100% solid idea in my head of what it should look like, but essentially, I would want the "Mame Tapper" art copied from the marquee to the top of the side art.  Then I'd want a picture of the guy from the original Tapper game in it, serving a beer somehow.   I believe there is a difference between what the Budweiser Tapper server guy looks like versus the Root Beer Tapper server guy looks like.  The Root Beer one has him wearing a red pin stripe type outfit, and the Bud one has him wearing a blue vest, white shirt, and red bow-tie.   I would want him to look like the Budweiser variety.    I could go either way on this, but the picture of the tapper guy could be modernized a bit and more cartoony.  Or else, we could stick with the pixelated version of the tapper guy, as long as it looks decent.

So, that's it in a nut shell.   Let me know if anyone would be interested in a project like this.   I would be willing to pay, provided it is a reasonable price.   If anyone is interested, please email me at markronz at hotmail dot com (or respond on here) and we can talk through any questions, and I can provide the AI file for the marquee.

Thanks so much!

Edit:   Not sure if anyone else was having problems with the attached JPG picture displaying, but just in case, I put the jpg on my website, available here:

Edit again...  Here is a zip file that has the AI file in it, in case anyone wants to take a look, or play around with it.

Agan any help would be very appreciated!!!

Have you considered making the marquee look like stained glass? the leading would need to be dark so when backlit it would look like pains of glass between. There is a limit to what can be cut out of glass, so attention needs to be given to "simplifying" the design so it looks like a real cut glass window. Details could be made to look like the painted stained glass used in church (and bar) windows.

I think the side art would look best against the wood if it were "old" in the sense of looking like a vintage print ad in B&W. If you want or need color on the sides then pull the stain glass look there too and create a simple bartender out of cut glass.

I played a tapper game once a long time ago. Very inventive cab!

Thanks for the ideas!   I would be open to a stained glass look, but I guess that's up to the artist that end up helping me out.   I can visualize what you mean though.  I think I would like color on the side art as well too.
