Hello all,
I bought a slikstik cabinet before they went under. I bought a WG D9200 monitor for it. Recently my monitor broke and I hired a local guy to fix the monitor. After ordering parts from WG on 3 occasions we gave up and he bought what was left of the monitor for parts.
I'm looking for a replacement. I run the windows version of MAME with the Maximus Arcade front end. I run Daphne, NES emulators, MAME, SNES, Genesis, etc. I also run Street Fighter 4 on it.
Wells Gardner sells a 27" D9800 that would work in it but it will cost $500 after shipping. I'm looking for something cheaper. I was thinking of just putting a computer LCD in there, and was looking for advice on how I could mount that and have it look good. Someone told me I may be able to modify a LCD mounting kit to do it. Does anyone have any advice on this? I will probably need a new bezel too.
Please help. My cab has been sitting broken for a while now and I'd really like to play some SF4...

Can someone help me out with this? I'm just looking for any monitor for this cab. It's been sitting there broken for some time now. Anything will do at this point. I just don't know how to mount a monitor that wasn't built for an arcade cab.

just go for a lcd and get some mdf cut that act as a mounting plate,do you have a glass covering the monitor?b
-
It has a bezel and a removeable piece of glass. I don't get how I can use MDF to mount a regular LCD to these mounting brackets.
-
i have been installing lcd into sega drivers, all you need to do is get a piece of mdf cut to the size of the monitor frame, drill at the crt frame fixing points and then thats a solid base to fit the lcd.then using a jigsaw cut out a hole on the mdf for you signal inputs and power, then you should find the lcd will have fixing points on the back and you can drill the mdf at those points and bolt
in regards to the bezel just get some thick card and cut that to the shape of the lcd visable screen
just check the thickness of the mdf with the lcd fitted does not go past the glass fixing points
-
Thanks.
What LCD do you use? Anything I have to worry about like refresh rate or resolution and stuff or will anything do? I'm looking for something cheap, otherwise I'll just get the D9800 from WG for $500.
Here's some pics. I have a good 6 inches from the bezel in there now to the mounting brackets so I think I will be ok on room. What kind of card do you use for your bezel, just black cardboard?
-
you can use an open frame 26" lcd like i use or go for an off the shelf lcd but make sure if it has side speakers they do not affect the fitting
here is a link to what happ controls do,they are expensive but its only for your information
http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49286100.htm (http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49286100.htm)
you can use any type of thick card,I have had bezel specially made for customers that want to pay the extra but if you have a glass that really is overkill
-
Thanks again.
Would you mind listing what particular open frame LCD you use?
-
yeah we used this,
http://www.eurocoin.co.uk/pd_26.cfm (http://www.eurocoin.co.uk/pd_26.cfm)
but we are U.K based and this is an industrial unit, you will not need anything quite so robust for home use

Do you know of any place that sells out of the frame LCD's for cheap?
-
i could not say in the U.S but you can pick them very cheap from china, best way forwards for you is a lcd tv with vga input-should find one cheap enough in the U.S
you could always try betson for one of their tri syncs
-
All the monitors at Betson were around the $500 mark. Every TV I've seen with a VGA input is around the $500 mark. If I'm going to spend that much, I'll just get the LCD from Happ or Wells Gardner...
Does anyone know of a TV or monitor for cheap that will work for this, or do I need to spend $500 to make my arcade work again?

I have a D9xxx I'll sell you for <$200. It works fine but has some burn. It's in Indianapolis, IN.
I may be able to get you a new Sanwa 29PFX for ~$300. It would be in Chicago. I don't know if there are any still available, and I've already got a line of people asking in front of you :)
If you don't need a trisync, I can probably get you a 27" (manually) switchable CGA/EGA for somewhere in the $200 price range. I don't think it has any burn, but it's not mine, so I can't speak with 100% certainty as to its availability. It would also be in the Indianapolis, IN area.
You can use a TV for this. They'll do CGA only, and you'd need a converter of some sort (either RGB to YPbPr component or RGB to S-Video) to hook it up generally. Results are pretty good, and you can use any TV you find on the side of the road in working order.
As for using an LCD, keep in mind that most LCDs are 16:9 while arcade games are 4:3. This means you'll only be able to put an ~24-26" LCD in that 27" CRT opening, and then you'll have to barn-door the games if you want things to not be stretched (making squares look like rectangles and circles look like ovals) leaving you with a picture size roughly comparable to a 19-21" 4:3 setup. Of course, if you can find a properly sized 4:3 27" LCD (good freaking luck - I'm not sure they were ever made), that's not an issue.
Used arcade monitors show up all the time in varying states of [dis]repair. If it's not burned and generally operational, they can usually be made to work pretty well. Just keep in mind that most used ones won't generally be trisyncs and will do only standard res (CGA).

For that price, just get a normal 25.5 lcd insted. Some are 1920x1200 (16:10) which give you a closer ratio to 4:3. That one cost half the price; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047)
That one is 28", same resolution, same price. VGA input, and the external dimensions are 25.7" x 20.7" x 10.2". If your cab is 26" wide inside, that one could be a good pick.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254043 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254043) Your 4:3 games are gonna be OK on that one, 21-22" diag.
Sure, they don't do CGA or SGA, but I just can't imagine how the image fit on the Happ one. Stretched? Centered?
If you have a computer in your cab, you should be able to output an acceptable result with the right aspect ratio while using some filters. The Happ lcd is probably just 720 or 768 pix anyway. The 16:10 is a better choice with 1200, more room to apply your filters.
Good luck! :)

Just curious what the quality of the industrial LCD's are compared to an off-the-shelf LCD monitor. They sync down to 15hz resolutions but they end up just being upscaled anyway don't they since they usually do VGA resolution?

This was just posted on rec.games.pinball...

I have a brand new Wells Gardner D9800 w/Bezel and factory warranty (until 10/2010) that I am looking to get rid of (I am the one who posted on rec.games.pinball). The Monitor and Bezel are both still sealed in the factory boxes that have never been opened. I purchased the monitor and bezel in October directly from Wells Gardner for a Mame build I was working on but I no longer need it.
Not sure where you are at but I am located in Columbus, Ohio. You can pick it up here or I can offer free delivery to the Ohio (Akron) or Allentown, PA pinball shows if that helps get it any closer to you. If you need it shipped I will ship it at whatever the cost actually is. I would like to get $380 cash for the monitor but might negotiate a little as I really don't need it. Feel free to give me a call to discuss if you like.
