is there any way to get the 4th button for primal rage the game is supposed to have 4 buttosn but in the mame config it only shows 3

The start button doubles as the fourth button, just like the original.
edit: Hmmm... What version of mame are you playing? The current mame shows 4 buttons per player and no start buttons.
edit2: ... and has been that way since 0.127u2, over a year ago (Aug or Sept of 2008)

Hmm, reread my postedits. I don't want to give the impression that using an older mame is wrong. It's just that mame changes enough that if you use an older version, you'll have to let us know so we can help you correctly. Also, some people have stopped at specific versions of mame, so they know it very well, while others keep updating all the time, so can help most with the newest versions.
I hope you got it straightened ouot.

k got it straight now but it always says errors with this game but seems to play fine , just hate seeing that every time I start the game, and i cant seem to figure out how to turn the volume up

The message is stating that because of incomplete protection emulation, the game might not work or is otherwise not guaranteed to run without issues. Thus, the red screen (a warning). To 'fix' the volume, goto Service Mode (F2) and make the volume adjustments you want in the menus there.
