Title: ArcadeVGA card vs VGA to EGA converter
Post by: staffell on January 06, 2010, 01:58:39 am
Hi there,

I just got into my new project of making a mame cabinet and just picked up an old gauntlet 3d atari cabinet with a Neotec NT-2701 27" monitor and i'm wondering what I should use for the output of the pc to monitor.  In the cabinet there is already a mounted VGA (PC) to EGA converter board that I believe handles up to 1024x768 from the pc and scales it to ega.  I'm wondering if there is a major difference using the vga to ega board I already have versus say an arcadevga video card that I would put in the pc?

Anyone know what the major positives and negatives are? I suppose the biggest plus is cost but I wanted to make sure I covered my bases.

Thanks
Larry

Personally, I would go with the ArcadeVGA card. It outputs every game in it's native resolution as opposed to a regular vga card trying to do it with Direct3D or something like that. I imagine that the converter would work just fine, but the ArcadeVGA would give you a better "feel" of originality when playing the game. Just my opinion.
