So I got a tv 20 inch emerson with composite. Since it doesnt have s video, if I connect my pc through composite, would the quality be terrible? I know this should be in the video section but I thought I could get a quicker reply in here.
-
I wont be great but try it and see if you can live with it. S video is better but in my opinion it is still not great.
-
Its all depends on what you like. I've personally used coax before and didn't mind it.

Wow that must have been tough! How was it?
-
If I recall correctly I had to use one of those pc to tv converters. Did it more just to see if it would work than anything. Had an old TV (early 80's model with DIALS :o and an RF adapter). ;D
-
Well, it's not going to look any worse than anything else you've hooked up to that TV over composite. o.O
-
I had great result with my leadtek 5900 ultra... not so much with my radeon 9600. Try it

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that on a 20" SDTV you probably won't see a significant improvement by using SVideo over composite. It depends on the tube, but lower cost TV's didn't put in good quality components anyway, so you aren't likely to see a huge difference.
BUT, like Nataq said...give it a try and see what you think. If you like the looks, who cares what anyone else says!

I had my hacked xbox(running Mame) plugged via composite and it looked good. Why would it have different results with a pc?
-
I've had my mame machine hooked up through composite for about five years now. Mame (I play mostly classics) and console (never had high resolutions anyway) emulators look fine. Unless you plan on running PC games at high resolutions, it won't make any difference.
As for the debate between s-video and composite, they are both crappy so just use what works and you will be happy. Game on.

On a higher end (for the day) set with a decent source, svideo looks marginally better than composite. IMO the difference is unlikely to be night and day.
-
Depends on the device and quality of the television.
Take a Super Nintendo for example, plugged to a new high quality CRT, and you'll see it's sharper with SVHS than composite. But I'd assume that hooking either cable up to a cheap TV will look pretty much the same (that is, not as nice as the quality TV! ;D)

On my 27" TV, S-Video is a great improvement since it eliminates composite dot crawl and is shaper. Only my digital cable box is on S-Video though, the game consoles I do on component and it's lovely, bright and sharp. :)
-
Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll settle with composite. Oh and Happy New Year to all!

I think you should go coax.... ;)

I'm going to go out on that same limb with bkenobi and hope it doesn't break. I had a 32" once and noticed a pretty good difference between composite and S-Video, but not too much. On a 21", very little. Composite will be better than coax, but even that isn't all that noticeable at 20" if you have a good coax connection.

Your talking the ones off the old Draw Poker machine right? I can hold them for a while, especially since there is a 6 foot snowbank in front of my shop where they are located. :(

hahaha is that so? Well then start shoveling I want my damn coin mechs!

Ya, right. It's blizzard-ing again today. That 6' drift is about to become a 12 footer by tomorrow. I doubt I'll be back in there till June. Hope you didn't need it before then. :P

Well you could blow that pile of ice away ala Solid Snake using C4. Hahaha just screwing with ya! I guess june will be ok dude.
