Title: Need the requirements for a Point Blank set up.(Monitor types.)
Post by: Brutal E on December 23, 2009, 05:41:13 pm
Thinking about picking up a PCB and guns. Would like to know options for display. I have a CGA/EGA/YUV to VGA HD-Converter PCB and a LCD monitor to use but have been reading this is a no go. Would I need to by a monitor for this game. I know of the supergun and aimtrak for mame but I want to use the original board so I am guessing my options are limited.

Thank you for your time.

Since Point Blank uses cathode ray timing guns, I can certianly tell you that no form of non-CRT screen is going to work no matter what's used.  It'll need a CRT monitor of some type at the very least.

Thank you for the response. That is what I thought. This probably goes for most arcade gun games I would imagine.

I wish I could help you futher.  I'm a huge Point Blank fan, but I cheated and went the Point Blank PSX + PlayStation II + Guncons + Sony Trinitron CRT TV route. :D

I play Point Blank on a normal 21" Samsung CRT monitor with my ACTLab's guns.

Think I Am going to repossess my 27 inch Sony Vega trinitron from my room mate. I said he could use it never said he could keep it. I have a backward compatible PS3, 2x guncons, 2x USB conveters, 2x guncon2, and a few good games.

The USB adaptors won't work.  They don't 'convert' PS1/PS2 controllers to PS3, they convert it into a generic USB gamepad that the PS3 supports.  These can not support specialty controllers like the PS1 mouse, NeGcon or the Guncon 1.  The adaptor will just not see a PS1 or PS2 gamepad and do nothing.  So any controller that required the game to specificly support it, won't work basically.  Only controllers that the system sees as it's normal gamepads.

For Point Blank at home, you'll need to use a PS1 or a PS2 which natively has those gamepad ports.

However PS2 based Guncon2 games will work on the PS3 as the Guncon2 is entirely USB and no adaptor is necessary.

Yeah, I'm probably the biggest home console light gun nerd on the forum. :)  Especially for PS1/PS2. :D

Thanks for the info. How about a converter and a regular CRT monitor I can get those for cheap. Also are Point Blank guns the same as Zero Point guns or Area 51 guns? I would love to do a multi jamma gun set up. If it cost me too much easier to buy a used ps1 and amazon all the classics. Gun game lover here was pricing everything from arcade Silent Scope to Point Blank machines.

A 'converter' for what?  I don't understand that part of the question.

Uhh, Namco uses it's own guns for Point Blank but I believe the guns are possibly intercompatable with some other cabs.  I have seen Point Blank and other Namco gun cabs with their Namco guns replaced with something that looks to be third party, most likely to replace a damaged original gun.  But that'd be something you'd be best to look up.

Will do thanks for your time. Favorite gun game? Mine I would go with Point Blank 2. Time Crisis 3 is favorite also. Never bought the PS3 game though. Too expensive for just one game. Gotta have two guns you know.

Converter? I forgot these are standard resolution games. Sorry about that.

I dunno much about using arcade hardware television signal converters, sorry.  No cab of my own, so I improvise with console gear. :D  The entire Point Blank series is cool and I have all three PS1 ports, but any light gun game I think is neat.  It's an arcade experience that is rarely seen at home, so I'm a fan of it.  I wish some of the newer ones would get console ports though. :(  Heck with two PS2's and a firewire cable you can even do dual screen Time Crisis 3 just like at the arcade. :D  But the consoles, with the right hardware, you can get pretty close to the fun of the arcade.

Cool set up. Love firewire never really got to take advantage of it. Looks like fun though.

Honestly?  Me either, but the PS2's that feature the firewire port can do dual screen setups.  In those photos it's Vampire Night and Point Blank 2 running on individual machines, but the PS2's are linked by a 4pin firewire cable, using that wire you can load Time Crisis 2 and Time Crisis 3 on both PS2s (You'll need two discs of course) and activate link mode.  Bam, arcade style Time Crisis.  A lot more fun that single screen split screen.

If you use a hard disk drive in your PS2 's can you still use the I-link ? I know the network adapter is disabled with a hard drive but I never even tried the firewire.

Huh?  Using a hard drive on a PS2 doesn't disable the network adaptor. o.O  And the firewire port is on the front, next to the USB ports.  Though only V1-V6 PS2's had firewire, the V7 and up replaced it with an IR censor used by the DVD remote.

Sorry , I didn't clarify- I meant an non Sony PS2 hard drive you use with HDAdvance. I thought it disabled the network adapter so you couldn't play your legal backups on the hard drive online.

Bought a slim PS2 with one controller off ebay 63 dollars total after shipping. I know the slim has no I-link but I would never use it anyway. Amazon trolling picked me up a handful of titles I never owned less than 60 bucks for like 6 games. Picking up a small crt tv and will be done. Lots easier than the PCB route I will admit.
