Title: Mortal Kombat 2 Multi MK Machine Project..
Post by: MK3FAN on December 17, 2009, 08:10:36 pm
Hey everyone. I recently scored an empty, somewhat good condition MK2 dedicated cab for $100. I am restoring it and converting it into a Mame of sorts that's just going to feature EVERY version of MK on one machine. I already have a Mame cab and I want to use this cab to play all the MKs to get the better/more authentic feel of them. Check out the videos so far...

Hey MK3FAN,
Great steal !! for 100 buckaroos  :applaud:
Now I remember seeing your MK2 with all the MK's. I thought that was sweet. Now your doing a mame MK ?
Please excuse me for ignorance, but I heard that running mame isnt as fast as the original boards, I guess they get some sort of late response.
Is this true? I suppose your going to ad a "Run" to tha panel..
How many revisions did they make for MK, MK2,MK3,MK4 ?
What frontend are you going to use ?
I have a MK2,(ultimate board )I found you on youtube to be a huge source of knowledge for anything MK..
I also have a extra MK2 Ultimate board, that I would like to barter for a Ultimate MK3 so I can make it a double
Any suggestions for me ? :)
Anywho, great steal ! Ill be following your work as you progress into this MAME..
Good luck !

Whats an MK2 Ultimate board? challenger hack? UMK3 boards are fairly easy to find on ebay for a pretty good price (for some reason, regular MK3 seems to cost A LOT more) I believe the revisions go like this:

Mortal Kombat YAWDIM bootleg
Mortal Kombat prototype rev 9.0
Mortal Kombat 1.0
Mortal Kombat 2.0
Mortal Kombat 3.0
Mortal Kombat 4.0
Mortal Kombat 4.0 T-Unit
Mortal Kombat 5.0 T-Unit
Mortal Kombat Super Ninja Turbo (or whatever the name is of the hack you own)

Mortal Kombat II L1.4
Mortal Kombat II L2.0
Mortal Kombat II L2.1
Mortal Kombat II L3.1
Mortal Kombat II L3.2 Europe
Mortal Kombat II L4.2 hack
Mortal Kombat II L9.1 hack
Mortal Kombat II challenger hack

Mortal Kombat 3 1.0
Mortal Kombat 3 2.0
Mortal Kombat 3 2.1

Mortal Kombat 4 1.0
Mortal Kombat 4 2.0
Mortal Kombat 4 2.1
Mortal Kombat 4 3.0

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 1.0
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 1.1
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 1.2
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Zeus Hack

Also, WWF Wrestlemania can be converted into MK3/UMK3 with a rom swap. I have both boards and swapped em for giggles, and it worked. MK3Fan, have you considered adding Wrestlemania to the game list? it has the same layout as MK, being a midway digitalized fighter and all. I might steal this idea and put a PC in my MKII and just list all the MKs in a custom MaLa list

I was following this as you were updating, via Youtube,  very nice.  I had thought of essentially doing the same thing, the only difference for me is using hyperspin rather than maximus, though with so many good front ends out there it's hard to settle sometimes.

Do you feel the games run well enough with the system specs you've got? noticed any latency issues at all?

I hear HyperSpin is the best out there. Alot of animated images. As far as looks and design.
It comes down a preference choice though.
If I choose to do a mame, Ill add HyperSpin...

Awesome job man, I'd like to do one like this as well.  I just picked up a UMK3 cab that will be perfect for it.  I have an unlimited supply of plain MK3 security chips if you end up wanting one to deconvert a UMK3 back.

Yeah! Hook a brother up! I already have a complete set of original MK3 chips including the security chip, but I can't seem to locate a cheap, working PCB. I have about 7 in non-working condition.

a good intro would be the opening to mortal kombat movie ( the first one) where its shows the 3D logo kinda like this
Mortal Kombat Movie 1 Intro of WIN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78VJe_LNOXw#)
only proble would be the text over the animation. Maybe it could be removed?

I wasn't sure at first but the other cabs in the photos match the ones in your videos.

Normally I would leave well enough alone, but his really bugs me.

It isn't listed as a MAME cab in the description.

Selling cabs with MAME and roms installed is not cool and is against MAME license and eBay rules.  If you expect the end user to do the install it should say so as a disclaimer.

I know eBay is buyer beware... but praying on fans of this video game is uncool.  Did you really think taking almost 2 grand off someone for this is right?

You need to take this listing down or be honest in the description.

Nice work with the Multi-MK cabinet.

A little tweaking would help though:

In Maximus' preferences, I would adjust the game list to re-order the MK games.  It bothers me that MKII comes after MK3 in the list.  This is due to the alphabetical way of things but it can be adjusted in preferences.

Also, I would skip the load bar in Maximus as well.  You can do this in preferences.

Last but not least, I would create a whole new theme in the editor.  I would make something with the red hue to match the cabinet.  Blue just doesn't work for me.

But other than that outstanding job!

P.S. - Thanks for the kind words about my MAME intro.  Enjoy it!

Well, first off, it is my cabinet. Second, I am not "preying" on anyone. Even if the machine has JUST the original PCB and was only MK2, I would still want at least $1000 because of the condition of the cabinet. Now throw in the cost of the computer and parts, you are at nearly $1500. I just want what it's worth. I am sure you can understand that. It says right there in the auction that there is a computer inside, not to mention that there's no way possible to fit nearly 14 PCBs and sound cards in one cabinet. I don't think ANYONE is stupid enough to think that they are all inside the cabinet. Lastly, what is dishonest about the description?

Also, there is a new listing...

The new listing is just as disceptive.  If its a mamed cab, it should say "MAME" somewhere in the discription not just "MULTI MK".  Argue it if you want but I think thats whats dishonest.  I can see that the parts do add up to $1500... but for that price "ANYONE stupid" would be expecting a licensed cab.  Nothing wrong with you selling it and making some money.  You've done the work and you should be paid for it.  Now for my other point...  you still shouldn't be earning money on the backs of the mame devs.  http://mamedev.org/legal.html (http://mamedev.org/legal.html)  You might also want to check if you are in violation of the Maximus Arcade Frontend license.

All valid points. Not going to argue. I just assumed that serious bidders would know it was Mame. In all honesty, if it doesn't sell, I'll most likely pull it down and try another time. I didn't purposely leave "MAME" out of the description, I just thought it would get more attention the way I described it than a generic "MAME" title. If you search Ebay for "Mame Arcade," you will find MANY auctions that say Mame right in the title. If anyone had a problem with what I am doing, then they would have to pull all of those auctions down also.

Can A forum moderator please split this topic?  I subscribed to this topic wanting to see what MK3fan was working on. I thoroughly enjoyed it until the nonsense with eBay was brought up.  Please continue that conversation elsewhere in another topic.

In my opinion it should never have been brought up in the first place, publicly that is. A PM directly to Mk3fan woul have sufficed.  Shame on you Push2Reject for trying to make him an example and publically attempting to tarnishing his reputation.

You're right.  I’m sorry.  Since I made a public accusation of MK3FAN, I’ll make a public apology.  A PM would have been the only appropriate thing to do.  Subject dropped.

I would personally vouch for MK3 fan, and the type of person he is. Even though almost everybody knows he is a good guy he has helped me, and many others out with any problems or questions no matter how petty they may seem. It's not cool to try and make an example of someones character publicly just like delusional29 said. I paid $700 for a 6 out of 10 mk1 cab so his price is right on for the condition of the cab alone with one pcb, not alone a working computer and all the labor involved.

So... How does your MK II and III handle in MAME compared to your PCB cabs? Also, what version of MAME are you using? Reason I ask is because I have a HTPC gaming machine w/ MAME as one of my options and for some reason MK II and III feel like they're being played underwater.

Sorry to necro this post but I really like this cab!  I have the same question..  Can you tell any performance or audio difference between the original PCB and the MAME'd version?

Also, what's a fair price about for a working MK2 cab?  :)

Awesome job on this though man, I really dig it.  I still just am battling with MAME vs PCB  :/
