Title: NEC XM29 plus powers on for five seconds then turns itself off.
Post by: Jack Burton on December 16, 2009, 03:04:56 pm
I just got an NEC XM29 plus and it looks like it has a really nice screen.  I have been looking for one of these for years!

I found the manual online here: http://www.necvisualsystems.com/Documents/UserManuals/xmxp29+.pdf (http://www.necvisualsystems.com/Documents/UserManuals/xmxp29+.pdf)

In the troubleshooting section it says:

"If the monitor powers on for five seconds and then powers off and enters standby mode and the amber light is blinking in one second intervals this indicates the power supply circuit and/or fans have been damaged"

What is the power supply circuit?  I hope this is an easy fix.

Fixed!

I took off the back and noticed there was a lot of dust and one of the fans was not moving.  I used a can of compressed air and blew out all the dust.

Then I turned on the monitor and tried to spin the fan with my fingers a little bit.  After a couple of whirls it started itself up and took off!

It's noisy as hell right now and I'm not sure if this fix will and last and I'll eventually have to replace the fan altogether, but it sure was easy.

Now I've got myself into another pickle by somehow turning off my own ability to adjust the controls on the screen.  I accidentally set "key control" to off, and now I can't set it back.

I suppose 24 hours unplugged should do the trick and rest it back.

Thanks for the links to the monitor manual, I've been looking for this for quite a while!  The fan in my XM29 is pretty loud as well, and I have thought about replacing it.  Fortunately, I haven't had any problems like the one you described (yet).

Would you happen to also have a link to the service manual?

your fan could likely use a good cleaning and relube of the bearings , Truecade

just takes a little time  ;)

I just had the same thing happen to my monitor, but the fan seems to be fine.  Also, there's a slight-but-distinct smell coming from the power board area.  Does anyone know where to get a power supply board?  Also, instructions on how to change it?

I don't have much faith that I'll be able to fix the monitor, which is disappointing, because it was awesome.
