Title: A Martijn style SF cab
Post by: marstc1 on December 15, 2009, 05:02:42 pm
So for a while now, like 5 years! I have been thinking about building an arcade machine and then I found this site, I came across Martijn's SF cab and I thought ... that is well tasty, that's the sort of thing I am after!!

I have always loved the Konami style cabs so this is what I came up with ...

Great site guys and big thanks to Martijn for his post, it made me get off my but and build the thing!

Nice job! the Angled front of the CP is a nice touch, and the art's very impressive.

Looks great. What were you doing during the summer  :D

Could you give us some info on your side art in terms of cost and where you printed at? It looks really sharp.

Looks fantastic!  Where did you get the black laminate?

Any way you could share the plans for it?

Nice work. Its always nice to see someone getting inspired by someone  :applaud:

What kind of bezel did you use? and how did the 90 degree t-mold work out in the corners?

Have fun with it

I have designed a very similar piece of sideart, just with different characters, at least now I know that it would look cool printed! ;D Great looking cab! I bet you are really pleased with that effort! :applaud:

Very nice work (http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif)  For a second there I thought your coin door was the The UNREAL CoinDoor™ sold by GGG.

Thanks everyone for the great comments I'm really glad you like it  ;D

I can't take all the credit though, my Dad helped me build it and taught me so much on this project .. big thanks Dad ;)

@Queeg - I got the art printed at my local printers who also supplied the plexi for the screen, marquee and cover for the CPL, they done a deal with me so the whole lot came to £200 inc.  I redrew all images so that they were vectors and made sure the psd's I supplied them were 300 dpi or above (another thing I learnt on these forums), it took ages but I think it was worth it as the prints have come out pixel perfect.

A close up for you ...

@PeaB0dy - What looks like black laminate is actually matt black adhesive backed vinyl (credit to my Dad for this one one of his ideas) it was really cheap off ebay, i think the whole lot came to about £15 and has given a great finish.

@Martijn - Cheers buddy ;) I went down the foam route, I used the same black vinyl as above which I stuck on the inside of the tinted plexi which has given it a piano black effect.  I then cut the foam, painted it black and used it to bridge the gap between the telly and the plexi ... worked a treat!

@thatItalian - Great minds think alike hey  ;) which characters did you use? here is a pick of the other side, it was taken just after I put it on whilst the cab was on it's side so it's a bit of a weird angle ...

Wow, beautiful job vectoring those. They look perfect. Can't wait 'til I've got the cash for full side art

I note from the cost being in £ you are based in the UK. Could you post the name of the printers and their address please?

Very nice machine, dude.   The artwork looks awesome.

The black vinyl as a replacement for laminate is a great idea; I may use that on my cocktail, since working out how/when to paint is a problem at the moment.  That would make it easier, probably nicer in the end, not to mention less toxic!

Thanks again guys

I now have an Amiga emulator running which works really well, I have been having loads of fun with Pinball Dreams (the buttons on the side work really well!) and Speedball 2 :)

@Silas (son of Silas) - I got them printed at a place called Fitt Signs in Norwich, great bunch of guys, they took the time to understand my needs and provided me with samples at no cost which was especially useful in choosing the level of tint for the front screen.  They took 5 days to complete the prints (during quite a busy period) and payment was taken on collection, I will def use them for my next project.

@push2reject - The cab is roughly 6ft tall, 3ft deep and 2ft wide.  I hope this helps .. let me know if you need anything more accurate.

@saurian333 - Would def recommend the vinyl as an alternative, I am really pleased with the finish - I can dig out the link from where I purchased it if it helps, it is UK based .. not sure if that's good or bad for you.

@adidas1984x - Good suggestion, I have some time off over xmas so any requests from anyone?

Yes actually, I'd appreciate that.  I ultimately decided to go with roll-on paint on this cab (cheap and not as "fumey" as spray), but for future projects, I'd like to get some price comparisons on they vinyl.  eBay US seemed a little expensive, and mostly had rolls too narrow to do it properly (definitely not wide enough for a full upright).

here you go ...

if you search the shop for matt vinyl you should find the same stuff which I used, good luck :)

Wow, even with the crappy exchange rate (for me, that is), those much better prices than I found.  Better selection, too.  I asked the seller about "posting" ;) to the US, so we'll see.  Thanks for that!

I used Ken and Ryu on one side, Vega and Zangief on the other.

Is yours vector also?

The images above have been offline for a while due to a domain / hosting issue however I have just sorted it so once again you should be able to see my cab in all its glory :)

I am still playing it and still loving it, will work on some vids and get them up here soon too.

keep up the good work.
