Title: What's the minimum spec required to run Visual Pinball?
Post by: slapaham on December 07, 2009, 09:28:45 am
I'm not new to what's required to run MAME competently but I definitely am when it's come to Visual Pinball...

What would be the minimum competent set-up for Visual Pinball...? When I mean competent, I mean no stuttering, sound problems, etc... ;)

np...check out the HyperPin forums as well. There are at least a dozen active cab projects going on right now. Ask questions over there...you will get answers from people that have experience.

It's strange... the PC I was going to use has a fairly decent spec (though is probably a little low on the RAM side) and that doesn't seem to want to run any of the tables - Visual Pinball complains about virtual memory! :-\

I guess what might be the best option is to swap that PC over with the one I'm using for the touchscreen monitor... SK Jukebox surely doesn't need much spec to run well... and that PC is probably just being put to waste being used for that... means transferring all the files across though which is a bit of a pain in the arse!

What are the specs of the PC? And can you be a little more specific about VP complaining about virtual memory? Is there some sort of error you are getting when you are launching a table?

Long story short the CPU has cache, when it is consumed it off loads to the RAM, when that is consumed it is then offloaded to the windows swap file which is your virtual memory. So now knowing this, you simply don't have enough RAM and your page file is too small. Either add more RAM and/or increase your page file (sometimes referred to as the swap file).

Ah, ok... thanks for that info. I think it might be sensible to swap the computers around anyway... the older one is still a good spec but using it for a juke is hardly going to push it - whereas the other PC is quite a bit more powerful and would be better at handling the graphics of the pinball...
