ok, there is a folder on the desktop called directx3 inside that folder is a setup icon amongst others, when i click on that i get a box within which one of the things it says is audio drivers-- no hardware support
theres a button marked reinstall direct x which gives an error if i click it, under that is a box (unclickable) saying restore sound drivers and below that a similar button for restoring video drivers which can be clicked and restores the drivers.
the sound card is working and drivers installed as far as windows is concerned. what am i missing?

Try installing a newer version of DirectX? http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-DirectX-Drivers-Windows-95/3000-18541_4-10000714.html (http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-DirectX-Drivers-Windows-95/3000-18541_4-10000714.html)

ok, ive gone into mame 32 options and set sound to no sound, and games launch so its working minus sound i now know.
removed directx3 via add/remove progs
loaded a cd of directx8 and windows said it was installed, it doesn't show up in add/remove programs and if i try to install it via add/remove it doesn't find the cd, where would i find the directx to see it is installed?
when i try to run mame with directx selected in the sound options it takes a little longer to get the error message than with directx3 ,like its trying but it fails
cheers all

If you go to the Run menu and type
dxdiag
what do you get?
