Title: Lubricating U360s?
Post by: Gamester on November 29, 2009, 10:20:25 pm
Anyone know what type of lubricant I should use for U360s?  My joys only have about a week of use on them, and already my player 1 joy is acting up and won't consistently return to center (sometimes it's off center by as much as 30%.  It's getting very frustrating for everyone that uses it.  Nothing worse than being deep into a game and having the joystick go the opposite direction unexpectedly when you think it's at center, or trying to select a game in my FE, only to have it keep scrolling because the joystick won't go to its dead zone.

At first I thought I might have a bent support, but if that was the case, I don't think it would ever return to center.  After playing around with it, I think it might be a lubrication issue (or lack thereof) which is causing it to stick slightly at times.

I thought I might try lubricating it before griping to Andy, but I'm not sure what type of lubricant would be safe for it?  I think it's a metal ball in a plastic socket, so I doubt any type of petroleum based lubricant would be a good idea...

I obviously don't want to do anything to make the situation worse.

Advice is appreciated.

[Sanwa G-40M-100 (http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/G-40M-100.htm)] is the official lube but unless you want to spend £20+ I suggest you buy some other silicon grease from elsewhere.

I would be surprised if the lack of lube is causing your problems though. I have had some my JLWs (essentially U360's) apart quite a few times and I know there is no grease on them but I have never had any problems. Are you sure they are assembled correctly?

shinetsu is only knockoff molykote44 medium.

molykote is cheaper, less thick and more slippery -for me better, joystick is quicker. believe me, Dow Corning is better firm.
