Title: Other Peoples Trash
Post by: hsr on November 25, 2009, 05:49:07 pm
Looking for thoughts on these video cards please.

Picked up someones else's garbage yesterday.  Out of it, have been able to get a generic mobo P4 1.8ghz up and running after swapping power supply out of other machine with dead board.  Between the two, they had these AGP video cards shown in the GIF's below.  The one is labelled MS-8817 which is a Nvidia Quadro2 MXR 32mb.  The other is a GeForce2 MX400 64mb.

I know neither is a stellar performer.  Neither is the computer.  Just figured I'd set it up with mame ver85 to replace an older system.

Wondering between the two, which should be the better performer?  The MX400 has a higher GPU clock and more memory, but half the bus width and less than half the bandwidth of the MXR.

If you had them both sitting there, which would you use?

Strikes me that it really doesn't matter. Not like you're trying to generate advanced 3D graphics there.

I guess I would try the lower RAM/wider bus since MAME is probably going to try and flip the image anyways.

At first blush, I would have guessed that the Quadro would be the better card.  However, after looking at the specs, it's pretty clear that unless you are looking at using an application that's likely to fill the 64mb texture buffer, you will be better off with the 400MX.  If you are just looking at MAME, either will work (as Savannah already said).  If you are looking for other stuff too (especially more demanding/modern stuff), you'd be better suited to invest in a cheap modern mobo with onboard graphics.  Even a modern onboard video solution will outperform either of these cards by FAR.

I think they're gonna be about the same. Try both out, play with them.
