Title: Joystick Wiring Problem
Post by: D_Harris on November 14, 2009, 09:06:38 pm
Are there any basic control panel wiring diagrams on this site?

I've been hacking a Ms.Pac-man CP and soldering and un-soldering leads for the last several hours and have not been able to get all of the joystick inputs working at the same time.

I'm not sure if the problem is the Hydrogen controller, but wanted to make sure the joystick is wired correctly before I continue with the ten buttons.

My problem may be that the original harness is still connected, so the grounds have to be arranged the same way, but I used a multi-meter to determine what was what before hand.

Nevertheless, I might as well rip off the CP harness and start from scratch.

I just wanted to make sure the wiring in the enclosed pic will work correctly.

Thanks a lot.

Looks fine to me.  My only comment is that you don't have to split the ground into two slots on the controller.  In fact, you'd be better off running another ground from "Down" and connecting it to the other ground slot on the pcb.  It creates a full loop that way.

I just peeked at my Ms. Pac; It looks like you have the ground wires where the main wires (your green, yellow, red wires) go.

You're wiring player 2's controls? (according to you diagram).
If that is a top view of your joy, the left and right look fine - up and down are mixed up.
As already mentioned, you can extend the ground from your left switch back to the ground on your encoder making a ground loop so everything will still work if you get a break in the ground line (unless break occurs right at a switch of course).

Actually, I'll be wiring only the player one side. The diagram is just for illustrative purposes only and is not the way my control panel is wired up at the moment.

I used my multi-meter to determine what each pin in the Ms.Pac-man edge connector does as detail in the pic below.

Nevertheless, like I said I will just take off the harness and wire it up to the controller.

(And the picture above is the bottom view of the joystick).

I had already bridged the two ground points on the controller PCB with solder. (And why shouldn't I just connect a lead from the left/yellow switch back to the ground?

Thanks.

Assuming the top of your pic is toward your monitor, the left and right are mixed as well, no?

You should.

i dont think the ground matters on a leaf switch you can hook it up to either lead if im not mistaken different from a micro switch. AWSOME JOYstick have one my self. What are you building. ANY pics :applaud:

Actually it's a temporary hack.

I attached the control panel to the top of a band saw stand that I had attached my Gorf joystick to earlier this year.  ;D

But it'll go back on the Ms.Pac-man when I figure out a way to get custom art made for it. (I intend to add six more buttons to).

I have several of these Midway bases with no sticks because no one reproduces them.  :(

If you're looking at the bottom of the stick with "up" toward the top of the screen in your illustration, both left and right are switched, and up and down are switched.

If you're looking from the top of the stick "through" the joystick case with up toward the top of screen, then up & down are switched.

The way to test, set joystick as if you were going to play.  Move stick left and hold it there.  Flip the joystick case upside down while stilling stick left and see which switch is closed.  Label it left.  Return joystick to right side up and repeat for other dirrections.  It's easier if the joystick is not wired yet, and you always flip the stick the way, and label "screen" on stick.

I'm not sure what you mean. (I'm hoping this isn't really that complicated).

My illustration is the view of the joystick from the bottom.

From that view if the joystick is pushed "up" it will activate the switch that has the blue lead attached.

If it is pushed "right" it will activate the switch that has the red lead attached.

Looking from above the stick, if you push the stick up, the actuator moves down, and moving the stick right moves the actuator left.

How this looks from the bottom depends how you flip the case.  If you flip it sideways, then up still is the lowwer switch, but right is now the right switch.  (If you flip foward/backwards, the right says with the left switch, but up is now upper switch.)  Your drawing shows it as if you flipped both ways.

I still don't understand what you are talking about.

And I'm not sure exactly why you are looking at it other than the way I said, but you haven't said the diagram was incorrect, so...

Your wiring is correct if you were to hold the joystick in it's normally mounted position and the just roll it completely forward to view from the bottom.

Can you clarify on

The problem was me attempting to hook up a harness for the controller without taking the original harness off.

But now it is jut the controller connected to all switches, so it works.
