Title: Red Lightning Theme Motorized Rotating MAME
Post by: newtrix on November 14, 2009, 08:07:48 pm
Last night I finished my restoration of a ms Pacman converted TAITO QIX.

While I was at it I Copied the sides to create a scratch build TAITO Replica.

Today I installed the Furing Strips and made most of the other panels.

I have yet to come up with a theme for this second arcade.   I'm considering UNLV as it will eventually be sold in Las Vegas.  Also considering a Bubble Bobble or Metal Slug Theme.  (Cause I like those games)

Man, you're a beast! i wish I had the energy (and space) to do multiple projects.
A Metal Slug theme would be awesome! Both ideas are good though...

Thanks,

Can anyone help me identify this CP.  http://cgi.ebay.com/SNK-MVS-NEO-GEO-ARCADE-CONTROL-PANEL_W0QQitemZ110415463127QQihZ001QQcategoryZ13718QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3911.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26ps%3D6 (http://cgi.ebay.com/SNK-MVS-NEO-GEO-ARCADE-CONTROL-PANEL_W0QQitemZ110415463127QQihZ001QQcategoryZ13718QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3911.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26ps%3D6)  Sez Neo Geo, but I don't think so.  Looks like a Midway Hinge.  Anyone?  And what is that on the bottom of it?  Is it wood attatched?  If so Why?

Confirmed.  The Bally Sente Mini Golf Insert is supporting a blank insert and then Neo-Geofied.   Snagged it for my build.  The Layout was pretty much what I was going to do.

I decided to do the speakers and Marquee Lighting on the panels before I attatched them while access was still easy.

OK I've been thinking about doing a rotating LCD and think I may have invented the simplist way to do it ever.   Take a look and let me know what you think.  I would also be interested in ideas for how to control it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-94-95-Ford-Ranger-Truck-Window-Regulator-Motor-RF_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem335758e373QQitemZ220508775283QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-94-95-Ford-Ranger-Truck-Window-Regulator-Motor-RF_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem335758e373QQitemZ220508775283QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)

Does that motor stop exactly at 90 degrees or do you need to figure that out too?  There are lots of great methods to making the monitor rotate - controlling it is the hardest part!  Ond's setup is the coolest I've seen so far but csa3d and DaOldMan go into the most detail - just do a search and you will find the threads.

for lcd rotating u may go the road of a classic german tating cabinet named jumbo quadro . its based on a bicycle rim and car wiper motor . this one was build for a 25 inch crt but can be easy adapted for lcd usage . there are 2 fix rollers on the bottom and 2 adjustable on the top .  the 12 v dc motor is mounted from below.

Thinking about using a 3 position DPDT crossover for forward and reverse and this circuit for dual limit switches.

Little Progress this weekend.  I doubt I will have room for the rotating LCD in this cabinet as the internal width is only 22 3/4.  I'll save the idea for a future project and base the width on what I need for the rotating device.  I dont have a monitor for this project yet.  I'm getting frustrated that no large 4:3 LCDs are available.  What models and sources are folks using for LCDs?  Considering this one. http://www.frys.com/product/5834433 (http://www.frys.com/product/5834433)  It's not 4:3 its 1680 x 1050.

Here are pics from this weekend's progress.  Rear Door, 12 V Power Supply (Hacked ATX) Car Amplifier.  Disassembled Coin Door.

Thats the LCD I have.  The ratio works pretty good for some games, not so good for others, what do you plan on running in this cab?  Vertical or horizonal install?

Horizontal
Title: Re: Scratch Build TAITO MAME
Post by: push2reject on November 23, 2009, 11:48:40 am
I find 16:10 works well for vertical games.  Not many horizonal games rendered @ original apect ratio will use up that space.  A 16:10 monitor is going to be closer to 4:3 then a 16:9 but the difference will be negligible.   Like you said you won't be able to make your screen auto rotate at that width.  What you could do is make sure the screen is perfectly centered in the bezel and design the cab to make sure the bezel is perfectly square.   If you place the monitor on a rotating stand.  You can then simply unscrew the bezel, pull the monitor, rotate it, and stick it back in.  Reinstall the bezel at 90 degrees (thats if you designed the outer demensions perfectly square)  Now this isn't a good solution when you are changing games on the fly, but it makes it easy to change setup if you change your mind about horizonal/vertical games down the line.

OK I bought a Dell 19" 4:3 today.  I know its small, but what you gonna do.  Should I mount it horizontal or vertical.  What say you?

Decided to go Horizontal though I may be able to rotate it.  I'll have to measure it out tonight.  Going with a red lighting theme.  Scott @ mamemarquees just shipped out the Marquee and I have red t-molding on hand.  So I'll paint the cabinet black satin.

I used a viewsonic VP2030b 4:3 in my galaxian.  It's *just* small enough diagonally to rotate, though I had to remove the original monitor mounting rails to squeeze it in.

http://ap.viewsonic.com/in/products/productspecs.php?id=258 (http://ap.viewsonic.com/in/products/productspecs.php?id=258)

It's a bit pricey, but has a super fast refresh rate, which was what was important to me.

Not much progress this weekend.  Finalized Mechanical Drive.  First Coat of Paint.  Finished Wiring Marquee Light.  Painted coin door.  Paint usually dries very fast here in Vegas but not when its 40 degrees. :(

Well it finally warmed up and I got another couple coats of paint on it.  Had a local sheet metal guy bend me up some control panel blanks. Added the t-molding and began cutting button holes.

This cab is finally almost finished, although my amplifier died and I need a stronger rotation motor.

Can you provide any details on how you are getting the monitor to rotate?  It looks like a perfect 90 degree turn with each press of the button - nice job!

I basically ripped off this http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Weisshaupt's_LCD_Mechanism. (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Weisshaupt's_LCD_Mechanism.)  Although I substituted the motor with a toy car I had lying around.  Turns out its not quite strong enough.  I already melted one motor.  I will probabbly try the RM2 suggested by Weisshaupt.  though I was considering a cheap battery operated drill as it will have lots of torque.  The motor is wired to a double pull double throw switch to provide forward and rearward motion.  Physical stops are provided at 90 degrees.  It is currently up to the operator to stop pushing the switch when the stop is reached.  I do have a schematic above, to use cherry switches to halt power to the motor at each end while still allowing it to reverse, but I have not wired that way and I may not.  The rotation is novel, but is hardly worth the effort, and hard to pull off well.  I wont be building another one.  my wife got me a flip video for Christmas so I can and probabbly will add a better video.  I also discovered while playing with Ubuntu and SDLMame that I can have the video automatically switched via catver.ini.

(http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w186/newtrix_photos/IMAG0204.jpg)  Well I finally sold this beast after the violence of the rotating mechanism broke the LCD.  I installed a new fixed position LCD in a more upright position.  These lcd's do not work well off angle.they should be perpendicular to the user.  I also used Hyperspin for the Front End and everyone is loving it.  Installed top 200 roms with images and themes.  Rather than 8000 with duplicates and non-working roms.
