Title: How do I wire this light fixture?
Post by: NatasNJ on July 19, 2003, 12:29:31 pm
I ordered this light fixture online.  Didn't realize it didn't come with a plug.  ANy suggestions or ideas on how to wire this so I can plug it into a simple surge protector?

The reason I ask here is I have very little knowledge about electronic stuff. :)

Thanks..

My thoughts were to find a normal plug wire, cut it and then splice the wires together.  Good idea or bad?

You can take a cheap $.99 extension cord and cut off the receptacle end and wire it directly to the pigtails on the fixture.  The proper way to do it is to use yellow wire nuts (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Product_ID=2693&DID=7).  If not, you can also just wrap them together tightly with electrical tape.

The polarized side of the plug (the wide one) is supposed to connect to the wire wire (neutral), and the narrow blade side connects to the black wire (hot).  If you have the third safety ground plug on your extension cable, just strip it back and connect it to a screw on the frame of the light fixture if it doesn't have a bare copper or green wire available.
