Title: Is this a scam?
Post by: Ummon on November 03, 2009, 03:25:10 pm
I advertised my Mappy cab locally on CL and got a response asking whether it was still for sale. I said yes and got this (suspiciously scam-y) response:

Hello

it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from craigslist to avoid
disturbance.I want you to know that i will be paying via bank
certified check .I will like you to provide me with the
following..information to facilitate the mailing of the check to you .

Totally. Probably Nigerian.

I can highly recommend this website

http://www.419eater.com/ (http://www.419eater.com/)

There are some people giving the Nigerians back, they spend 3-9 months emailing with the Nigerians and make them do quite funny things like wood carvings and mailing it to them and record "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy".

This story (http://www.419eater.com/html/bigman.htm) is quite funny:

Tell the person you will only accept cash and/or in person. That way you can set the terms and not have to worry about it. If they dont like that then most likely is the scam artist at work. Most people interested in a full size game would be willing to work with you to make you happy to sell mappy    :laugh2:

Dude, it's a copy / paste message that gets sent to a lot of people. There's no question it's a scam.

That's what I thought. I was kinda curious how much trouble they could cause with the information requested, as none of it is......ohhhh, one of the things many places (like bank and cellular customer services) do to 'verify' who you are is ask for your mailing address. Ahh.

I need to get back to my baiting activities. I still have my "church" online that I used for baiting. Well, winter is coming and I will have too much free time, so I guess it will be back to having fun at these low-lifes expense.

In such dealings, I would say "Cash, Money Order or Pay-Pal only."

Those are the three things that can't bounce.

Yeah there are some great ones on there :)

[This (http://www.419eater.com/html/john_boko.htm)] is one of my favourites. They got the scammers to have a C64 carved out of wood and shipped at their own time/expense. You wan't to read the whole thing, its pretty damned funny  ;D

No, fake money-orders are a big problem. You cash them, send off the goods, and then weeks later your bank calls you, says the money order was fake and withdraws the amount. You are left with no goods, and a financial loss.

So I just read both 419 stories linked in this post and boy are they hilarious! (spent probably 2-3 hours reading) that video of the 2 Nigerians recreating the Monty python bit was absurd, I can't believe how gullible they can be when their entire goal is to trick people themselves. I really applaud the scambaiters for their efforts

+1

By the amount of emails the send back and forth, they must use a lot of time each week and for several months. But those stories are funny!

Winter for you, summer for us. Wait. I mostly do the same thing regardless of season. Well, I've started going to the roller rink.
