Title: log splitter got me yesterday (pic) added
Post by: daywane on November 02, 2009, 10:49:50 am
been working 12hr days 7 days a week. mandatory!
got my first day off in a month yesterday.
cut my index finger on my right hand off! the tip at the first joint.
Not cut off fully, it was still hanging on. It will be fine. hurts like hell right now. typing left handed is hard.

I had my right hand on the log , left hand on the lever.
Log kicked up and pined my hand onto the ax part and ram kept going for second before i could realize what happend.

scared the heck out of me for about 10 min. wife freaked out and that made me calm down.

It got slammed in a door when I was 5 or 6.  It was reattached by a plastic surgeon.  The end.

Cant wait for the sequel.

Well you learned now but never have your hand on a log when splitting with a log splitter.  In addition to the pain it caused you, the log could explode taking off fingers.

There are a lot of stresses built up within some logs, especially near knots and crotch wood.  lol I said crotch and wood together.

I've seen logs pop and was very glad I didn't have my hand on it.

NO!!! Will you stop that? Or at least zip the file or something?  :scared

You're pretty lucky. I have something like this crazy thing (http://www.thestickler.com/). You basically jack up your truck, attach the wood screw to the drive wheel, pop your truck into drive, and split wood. Depending on the gear ratios, it spins scary fast on some vehicles. To make things even more interesting, I don't even have the kill switch since mine is probably over 35 years old.

I actually prefer using the log splitter over the wood screw. It moves a little slower. ;D

Yikes, man.   :dizzy:

How's the heart and everything?  You were randomly passing out a few weeks ago and then seemingly disappeared...

the blood presure pills and slacked off the beer (well... I switched from 6% alch. to 3.2%)
still pass out from time to time.
Doc thinks I have a problem getting blood up to my brain at times.

finger fells itchy today. it has been 8 days, I guess it is healing.
Had the bandage replaced Friday. The Doc gave it a good scrubbing :dizzy: Hurt like heck.
I was bitting my lip. The Doc looked at me and said sorry , I know it has to hurt.
I told him it was a good pain... Means the nerves are working.
He said that was a very good attitude and is correct

I get stitches out some time this week

So... you're still passing out... and are having brain/oxygen problems... and they still haven't narrowed down the cause?

Is the issue here the medical people or are you not treating this like the life or death issue it sounds like?

+1

Go to a specialist. After my mother passed out and collapsed on a heater resulting in 2nd degree burns, she went to a specialist. The doc outfitted her with a monitoring device, found a suspected cause within 72 hours and confirmed it with a scan.

All the previous doc did was keep upping her blood pressure medicine and giving her other medicines to "fix" the cause. Didn't even bother doing a chest x-ray. Truth was, she needed none of the medicines the bastard was giving her. :badmood:

Really, all it is going to take is passing out behind the wheel.  I assume you're still driving if you're operating log splitters.  If you pass out while driving you'll be lucky if you don't kill someone else nevermind yourself.

stitches come out tomarrow, I also see how much felling I have in the finger. Itches now.
it seems to switch from burning to itching.

I have no idea what is next? I hope that is all there is. Deer hunting starts Saturday.
I can shoot left handed but not as well as right handed. My dominate eye is my left eye
so.... I should be shooting left handed. Been working at shooting left handed for 2 years now.

knock it off damn it!!! I am not a univalent! The log splitter has nothing to do with passing out.
I have learned how to controll them with breathing.
I have learned the symptoms when it coming .
There is a felling of dizziness. I just need to stop and stand up. Breath deep a few breaths and carry on. Most of the time it has something to do with stomach muscles being used.

I had my stitches removed to day.
I will add pics later. I think it looks nasty!
Doc grabbed my finger and squeezed the fluid out  :hissy: and a bunch of  :censored: :censored: :censored: maybe even a  held up inside.
he said it looks OK.
Looks black to me. (well in spots)

I got a new finger splint today. It only covers the tip and the first knuckle. Middle knuckle is VERY stiff. Very hard to move at first. I had to REALLY Think about it to move it at first.
I can get it moving about 90% after a lot of moving it, but soon after I stop moving it it locks up again.

I go back in 3 weeks.

:'( This is going to take a long time to heal.

I love to timber trees, (I own 5 chain saws) 1 log splitter just rebuilt. access to one more log splitter if needed ( plan on buying a $1,700 vertical one next year) 2 trucks , a van and 4 trailers.

I am building up a nice business on the side. I get paid to drop the trees, Paid to haul the wood off, paid to haul the brush, then I sell the split wood 1 year later. +  I heat with wood

I have access to many tracktors. I do a LARGE garden now

I hunt for most of our meat
If i must give up on theses things .... just shoot me now
I work at my factory job for insurance on my wife

FWIW, nobody meant to imply the dude is an invalid.  We're trying to tell him he may well become one if he doesn't take charge of this problem.

I still need to send them from my phone to my sisters phone so she can email them to me (pics)

I go back to the Jewish hand specialist DEC 2ND. Finger is still in a splint.
hunting sucked. I missed everthing I shot at. At one point a Buck just turned around and looked at me. I could just read his mind. You have to be kidding me. ( I did have a new gun with me)

I went home and grabbed my old 30-30 (was my grand fathers) next morning I got a 8 point buck.

This accident is starting to cost me some cash.

I allways do most of my own car repairs. I went to change the fuel pump in my van, first I disconnected the fuel line. Yep you guessed right. Gas went right on my bandage,  :censored: :censored: :censored:.
I quickly replaced line and put my butt back into the house.
now I have to pay some one. also I have had to buy propain, I can not grab the logs to split the wood. My 13 year old daughter helps me, but (hope she never reads this) her will is stronger than she is.
I have a plumbing leak in the bath room. I can not seem to get to it one handed.
I said the heck with it all today.
I went to the bank, took out a 5 year loan (I am only getting a $5,000) loan i am going to get my plumbing fixed, cars fixed, and just heal. I have done damage to my body in my 43 years but I think this one tops them all

Dude, it would appear that you just have some very bad luck. Didn't you also get in a car wreck not to long ago? I hope that you get that issue resolved with your passing out, and if you do continue to split wood and play with chain saws, I suggest you keep a few pigs around to shoot instead of bucks. I hope you get better soon.

I haven't caught up on reading this topic for a while now...just due to the shock of the first pictures. But it looks better than it sounds.
I think the thing with movement will take quite a bit of time. I had a bunch of nerves cut around one of my knees during surgery a few
years back. It took about 6 months for the feeling to be somewhat normal.

As far as the money thing...and the deer thing (at least you got one that's better than most do a season.) it'll all come around.
Bad things seem to pile up together. Don't let it get you too down. Winter time tends to make things seem worse than they are
due to all the dark weather and the cold. I'm rooting for ya. It'll get better I swear!

 :)

update:
finger is much better now. still a bit hyper sensitive. not as bad as before.
looks a bit funny still. scar feels more like a over tight rubber band on my finger. I have most of my movement back..

I have a tendency to still hold that finger out. I do it with out even thinking about it. I have to mentally retrain my self to use it.

I was doing a change over yesterday on one of the machines I was running. (The second shift operator is HUGE!!!! Very strong) he seems to over tighten EVER THING. the allen wrench vibrated when the bolt came loose. That hurt like heck, then I whacked it with a socket wrench

wife's car is all back together. now I just have to fight red tape at court house for salvage title and have sheriff inspect the car.

traded my Blazer, (getting my van painted, and new fenders, hood and grill put on) Van was bought here on buy sell trade

bought my old 1978 F150 custom truck back.  I had a carb rebuilt and bought new front shocks, still need to install. Very cold outside. cold hurts my finger.

drinking: cut it down drastically. (still drink to much though)
used to be 3 cases of ice beer every week.  Ice beer is 6% alch.

now I drink light beer 3.2 % alch and 2 cases every week

fainting spells seem to have gone. high blood pressure seems under controll.
still have red markings on my tummy. (Liver problems still I think)

finances are doing MUCH better.

every thing is up to date. no more late fees!  :applaud:
weight is down. went from 220 lbs to 198 lbs I am 5 foot 9 inches.

Wow. I thought my 3 cans of Dr Pepper a day was bad  ;)

I quit that, like, about 3 years ago. Don't really miss it anymore. Get a carbonator and some lemons or limes. Just as tasty and no sugar/carbs (and a LOT cheaper too).

Good to hear you're doing better though!

put the rebuilt carb on the truck today.
1 barell carb straight 6 300c motor = (work horse) (very LOW GEERED)
SWEET!   hit the gas pedal to the floor 1 time, closes the choke.
let off gas, turn key and purrrrrrrrr! still idles at 12,000 rpms , new it should idle at 500 rpms. sounds like a big difference but not really.  I hear a small miss fire, and a bit rich smell in the exhaust.

not normally this anal on my rides, but this Truck is almost mint. Plan on keeping it that way. I would put pics up but the front seal is out. 1 to 2 quarts a month leak  :-[
need to fix and steam clean motor before pics!

I went in the bed room with my finger in my mouth and tears pouring down my face!

My poor wife damn near pissed her self,.... She jumped up and looked at me and said "DID YOU DO IT AGAIN!" !!!

I just shook my head with my finger in my mouth. Tears coming down my cheeks. took me a few seconds to  say NO! it is just wet and very cold! Hurts like HELL!!!!
