Anyone know of a good source for these?
(Original Xbox, not 360, unmodded)

Another dead Xbox? :D

It's not finding a new drive that will be hard, it's getting it to work in your box that will be.
(MS EEPROM.bin and all that jive)

I don't believe the DVD drive is any problem. The hard drive on the other hand....

Yeah the DVD drives are totally interchangable, no problem. Only HDD's have keys matched to the EEPROM, though you can lock a new HDD with a matching key.
BUt yeah, I've done it, you can swap any Xbox DVD drive into any other Xbox without issue.

Duh..... I had HDD on my mind.
The DVD drives are totally interchangeable, but do have those funky connectors though.
So yeah, another dead box, or ordering one.
A standard drive can be made to work, but not such a pretty install.
Or possibly tear into the drive and clean the laser assembly, that cures a lot of non-reading drives. (unless it's just dead dead)

I cleaned the lens and the magic mirror... no dice...
I tried the pot adjustments... still no dice... most of the time I get the error "Can't recognize this disc"...
Maybe 1 out of 5 times I can play a minute of a game, then it locks up.

Mine is totally seized up and you have to open up the xbox, and open up the DVD just to get the disc!!! Lol so I'm in the same boat - where is a good place to get a new DVD drive instead of a spares/repairs on ebay?

If that is a Samsung drive you can normally Tap the top of the Xbox (or drive) firmly as you press the eject button. This will let the disc come the rest of the way out. I have had 4 or 5 that had trouble opening the drive and this always worked for me.

Check the Llamma (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=64_22&products_id=780)

Only problem with that is that they are $50. You could buy 2 or 3 xboxs at a pawn shop for that and take your chances. Personally, I don't even use my DVD drive but I don't play games on it so...

But at the pawn shop you won't get a new Samsung drive.
