Title: tech predictions....
Post by: Ummon on October 29, 2009, 02:31:28 am
This is both interesting and amusing:

Robert Rice's predictions for augmented reality..... (http://curiousraven.squarespace.com/home/2009/10/26/future-vision-2012-augmented-reality-predictions.html?lastPage=true&postSubmitted=true)

We had a guy come in at work for a lecture series a few years ago about second life of all things, and listening to him, you would think that this was going to be some revolutionary culture changing, earth shattering phenomenon or something. I don't put much stock in the soothsaying of "futurists". These types of phenomenon always seem to come out of left field. (Of course this guy in this article isn't being all that serious)

Dude, you should apply for the first patent - you're already in an augmented reality!  ;D

Side note: your avatar rocks. Loved that show as a kid.

Wake me up when there's a BJ-9000 machine.

Remember that part in that Schwarzenegger crap fest The 6th Day - the sex chair? That is what I want!

It would be an improvement over the PBJ-4600 machine we have right now.   ;D

Is this just a bunch of buzzword blah-blah like when it was claimed entire cities were going to be recreated around Dean Kamens groundbreaking new invention? I read articles on it claiming it to be everything from an auto-piloted flying car to a Back To The Future style hovering skateboard.

When if finally arrived, it turned out to be a scooter and its only impact was keeping fat rent-a-cops fat.

Augmented Reality will have its uses but right now, it's pretty much where "Virtual Reality" was in the early 90's. 3 years won't be enough increase in CPU power and other devices/tech needed to make it a mass market thing. Just look how long it took for the mobile phone and PDA to combine into one kick-ass mobile device usefull for the mass market (10 years!)

It took 5+ years to settle on a 1080 DVD standard. The more I think about it the more I think that dude is outta his f'ing tree.  ;D

One thing you have to look back on is he was talking about this stuff not happening here. Which is why the things ya all have mentioned have taken so long to happen here. Real wifi, etc, has been around in Asia for over ten years.

But I found the way he characterized things funny. It's a sort of black humor/geek speak. This guy is in the industry, too, so a lot of what he's talking about is completely unfamiliar to the lay person at the very least. I happen to grok what he's talking about because, among other things, I stick my head in enough places to get an idea.

Of course, that 'augmented reality' is even a buzzword or concept is because for it to exist, it has to be a marketable idea, let alone a market of its own. Otherwise it'd just be a sub-level of lifestyle that people wouldn't really be aware of, but utilise in a way that would make social networking look like preschool pillow parties. Of course, this is the idea, fundamentally. Which brings us back to square one.

Hnhnhhnhhnhhnhhnhhnh. Except I'm gunning for a 'resource-based' society.

I just like the image itself - the baddie dude (I have seen the show a few times), and the color tones and contrasts. I thought of omitting the text, but then decided it was a neat impromptu meaninglessness. Any perceived notions, by others, of representation  might be incidental.

I prefer the Star Blazers avatar myself...

Ehh, Starblazers was weak anime to me. They were still drawin 'em stick-like, too.

Dude, it's Starblazers 30th anniversary! How many Anime, series do you know of that's been around that long. The genre really hadn't been developed yet at that point.

I hold no allegiance to anything. Just like smoking dope, Voltron, Robotech, even Appleseed were cool. Then I outgrew them. I give them their due in the scheme of things, there is a certain novelty to them, but I don't watch them anymore. I surely don't condone their later iterations, particularly 3D.

Anything anime of the 70s I was disappointed with even as a kid.
