Title: Atari Emulation - What do I need?
Post by: stuzza on July 17, 2003, 09:39:45 pm
Now that I have all the nintendo and sega consoles setup and running on my cab, I was thinking of putting some atari games on there to.  The atari was a bit before my time :) and I have never actually run an atari emulator, so don't know which ones are compatible, run with a frontend etc...

I was thinking I'd start with the atari 2600, 5200 and 7800.  Can someone recommend a good emulator for these, which will run fine from Mamewah in Windows 98.

I've only ever played River Raid and Pitfall on atari, so if anyone can recommend some "classic" atari games, that would be good too.

Thanx in advance.

Stuzza,

Z26 was re-programmed by PacManFan about 3 - 5 weeks ago using Mame Standard Buttons.  Do a search for this on the site to get it since you are using a Cab.  Atairage.com is a major site for Atari Stuff.  I have a lot of roms for Atari that i have on cartridge as well (too bad the 2600 quit).  I loved playing River Raid the most.  Chopper command was another goodie.  The game i am most addicted to is KaBoom!  Don't know why, but i am.  Give it a try.  Drop me a Instant Message if you are looking for some ... Game Hints?...chough chough sigh sigh!

Oh, sorry stuzza.  I prefer Stella X for the 2600.  It looks much better than Z26 on my cab.  And it launches right from Mamewah.  The keys are no remappable.  Hopefully someone will remedy this....Pacmanfan?

SpruceMoose:  Yeah I forgot Adventure, But i must try this Yar's Revenge.

Stuzza:  SpruceMoose is right StellaX is nicer, but just as he mentioned, non-remappable keys.  Personally i rather have Z26 because of the mapping.

One thing i have noticed about the atari emulators and the joysticks... These games are easier.  I remember jamming the hell out of those old atari joysticks to move, they were so non-responsive.  It used to be all about the timing to get anywhere near decent to get through Pitfall...

Give me a link to the source code for the windows version of Stella (StellaX) and I'll see what I can do..

I would really appreciate any time you could devote to this!

Here is the main link:

http://www.emuunlim.com/stellax/ (http://www.emuunlim.com/stellax/)

I also found it here because the other link gave me some problems:

Thanks for the reply guys!!  Really helpful.  I was just playing around with z26 and managed to get it to run ok, although was annoyed by the non key remapping!  The graphics of the 2600 made me laugh  ;D  Boy have computer games really advanced since these.

I'll give the PacmanFan version a go tonight and see how it runs. - Thanks for this PacmanFan

I'll wait and see what PacmanFan can do with StellaX before I give it a try.
Looks like I'll have to try out Kaboom! and Yars Revenge and Adventure :)

I downloaded the screenshots from Atariage but they are not a complete set.  Does anyone know where I can get the full Atari 2600 screenshot set?

The problem with stella X (windows varient) is that I never see source code of the port... (it's not shown on that page)

For NES I use FCE Ultra, purely because it can run just about every nes rom. - trust me I know, I had to load over 2000 nes roms into it to create all the snapshots!  You can't exit it with the Escape key, however this doesn't bother me as I use a program which allows me to close all windows with the same button.  I have heard VirtuaNES is also meant to be pretty good and can be exited with the Esc key.

For sega Genesis/32X/Cd I use GensFE.  There was a version of this posted a while ago in the forums which will exit with escape key, if that is what you need.  For Sega Master System and Gamegear I use MekaW.
