Title: Feedback on my CP Overlay
Post by: doanut on October 23, 2009, 10:12:38 am
Hello all,

I have been viewing the posts for a few months and I am very impressed with some of the arcade machines out there.  I started building my own about two months ago and I am down to the contorl panel and marquee.  I was just hoping for some feedback on the control panel overlay, it would be most appreciated.  As you might have quessed, I have built a custom Spiderman unit following the instructions from arcadecab 2, but was then inspired by Knievel, so made some changes on the fly.  I will post some pictures when I am done.  The first overlay is from a Spiderman poster, but I thought the quality may be poor once I enlarged the photo to the correct size.  The second one I created in Illustrator, with some touch up work in Photoshop.  I am going to add a layer mask to the second one to make a little more darker like the first one.

Oh one more thing, the joystick for player 1 on the left is kind of hard to see but it is there.  The top midle outline has a 4-way joystick, spinner and two buttons, much like Knievel designs, again these did not show up to good.

Between the two, I definitely like the top one better.  The bottom one kinda has bright red overload, especially with the red buttons.  EDIT: If you add a layer mask like you said, it will probably look a lot better.  Didn't catch that at first.

Another approach might be something like the attached.

Also, you don't have to wait until you're done with the cab to post it!  Start a thread in the Project Announcement section and let us follow your progress...   :)

I have a preference for the first one... the thik heavy mask "web" lines in the second version are going to feel huge on a full-size panel I think.

  Spidercab.....Spidercab.....does whatever a Spidercab....ah it doesn't work...

The first one is cool as is the one Gamster posted but they are tough to recreate in Illustrator.

I'm with Billy_Goatfeet but I do think what Gamster posted would make a better look I think it could be done in I
Illustrator but the fade effect would be easier in Photoshop using the two programs I think i could be done.

Agreed theegg.  I think the outlines wouldn't be too bad, but the texturing is what would be the greater challenge.  I think Photoshop would be the place for the texturing.   A combo Pshop/Illustrator could work.
