Title: Borderlands
Post by: ahofle on October 22, 2009, 01:02:14 pm
Anyone else picking this one up?  It's an FPS + RPG combination.  I just hope the PC version isn't dragged down by the console versions (-cough- Left 4 Dead).

The commercials made it look pretty cool.

What's your beef with the PC version of L4D? I quite enjoy it and look forward to L4D2.

Everyone around the office bought borderlands yesterday.  I checked out a review, but the comic book graphics turned me off.  Is the game really good though?

I picked up Borderlands today but haven't given it a shot yet.  I'm hoping my buddies will pick it up soon so we can play as I really think this will shine as a co-op experience.  I'm really looking forward to it.  I'm a bit under the weather though, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to give it a shot tonite...

For one, the fact that there isn't a real server browser blows.  Getting a server is more like Mario Kart Wii than a multiplayer PC game.  We were connected to a server in the UK with 300+ pings a few nights ago LOL.  And if you happen to come across a server with an interesting mod, good luck ever finding it again.  The game was also supposed to be supported and enhanced by Valve for a very long time (like Team Fortress 2 for example), and then they announce a 'sequel' less than a year later, and at full price no less.  That one caused a lot of crap with their fans.  It pretty much looks like the same game to me, which is why I'm not buying it.

Guess it helps that I don't play online. Too much douchebaggery for me to deal with.

They have released several free new campaigns for it on Steam.

As for the sequel....bring it! I get it free  ;D

Hehe, well the best part of that game is that you can play online with friends-only, so no douchebaggery.  We usually have 3-4 of us on there.  It's even more fun playing coop.

Exactly.  I don't know if any of you have ever played Deus Ex, but I would probably rank it up near the top 5 games I've ever played.  It was an FPS with a bit of RPG thrown in, which is exactly what Borderlands is.  Plus the addition of 4 player coop play!

Yeah, the problem is, my friends with decent PCs don't play L4D, and my friends that do play it are console gamers.

If I had people to play it with, then I'd definitely be on there (too much, probably), but just jumping into a game with random strangers is never fun. (And I have no headset, so I'm not the online gaming type anyway...)

Back on topic, I'd like to try a demo of Borderlands sometime. Looks pretty neat.

I got it, I like it MUCH better then FallOut 3 (and Im a HUGE Fallout mark). the "cartoon" graphics dont look bad , and in fact you really only notice it on humans, the wildlife looks pretty neat.  Game got great reviews (most hovering around the upper 80s) and other then 1 little problem with one of the early missions (its impossible to do unless you lvl up by either killing random animals or completing side missions; and I mean its quite literally impossible to do at lvl 7) I have no beef with the game....yet, lol.

I've preordered the game on steam along with a few of my friends and really look forward to playing it.

Also, L4D was a fantastic coop game and I'll definitely be picking up the sequel when it comes out.  They didn't support L4D as well as I hoped, but considered I've logged about 100 hours in the game, I think I've gotten my moneys worth  ;D

Me and 2 buddies have played about 10 hours of this game over the past 2 days.  Wow it is really a blast.  It's not a perfect game by any means, but as a co-op experience, I haven't had this much fun in a very long time.  Great great fun.

Nice to hear, I'm looking forward to it on Tuesday.  Would you mind elaborating on the 'not perfect by any means' comment?  Just curious what cons to expect.  One thing I'm a little disappointed in is having to choose from only 4 characters.  Would have been nice to have some more customization.

I thought that too until I started looking at how diverse their skill trees are.  Two people could play the same character and only have one skill in common (the one base skill each character has), which I think is pretty good.

Just to clarify this, when you get the mission you're around level 7. If you go try to do this mission it cant be done because you dont have a gun good enough to damage the "boss" faster then his shield regenerates BUT if you go to the available side missions, not only do you level up (which gives you better skill perks) but you also get better gear which makes the original "main mission" very doable.

I think you guys might wanna take advantage of, incase it gets patched, is all the mailboxes and other boxes get refilled when you reload the game, so you can get some quick cash/ammo by saving/reloading.

That reload is also great for rare item chests.  Makes it really easy to farm for weapons. I should have internet again by monday so if anybody wants to play online let me know.

It just occurred to me that this game's engine and design would make a GREAT Gauntlet remake.  Basically the same 4 player coop RPG idea, but instead of modern guns your pickups would be swords, axes, potions, etc.  The Warrior's skill tree would be like the berserker, the wizard could summon a dragon, etc.
